Scorecard

Portsmouth Cricket Club - 2024 U9A Warrior v Burridge on Mon 22 May 2017 at 18.00 Confirmed
Portsmouth Cricket Club - 2024 Won by 9 runs

Match report An intelligent performance from our final batting pair saw The Mighty U9A team see off Burridge and win the game by 9 runs. This was an entertaining but occasionally fraught game, where we chased down the opposition score finishing the game with some very sensible cricketing decisions from our batsmen in the last over.

Portsmouth lost the toss and Burridge decided to bat on a glorious warm and sunny evening at St Helens.

Huw and George opened the bowling, Huw nabbing the first of 3 wickets of the game with his 5th ball of the innings, clean bowled, bails off. Burridge were in deficit from the off.

Tidy bowling by Bethan and Charlie in overs 5 and 6, with just 1 one run scored against each, just 2 wides and 8 dot balls between them keeping the Burridge attack at bay. Monty chipped in with a wicket and by the 8th over and the half way stage we had them pinned back to just 228, a great start.

In came the Burridge left hander who was left struggling a number of times against the Portsmouth bowling attack.

We welcomed Sam, our new player and Super Sub in over 8 and he made an immediate impact with his sharp fielding saving 4 runs. Well done Sam !

By over 12 our opposition had amassed a total of 254 for the loss of 2 wickets; they needed more to make a game of it.

The final batting pair hit the Portsmouth bowlers for 40 odd runs including 6 fours and a super 6 which cleared the boundary and the watching parents by a county mile.

Portsmouth were set 298 runs to win.

We drank our squash and discussed how to go about our reply.

Portsmouth decided not to break with recent tradition and lost a wicket in the first over. Indeed, it was the second ball of the innings from a very accomplished fast bowler, clean bowled. It could have been worse, but we dug in.

Alex and Heath came in at 224 and pushed the score along to 250 with some super strokes, although we did manage to shed 10 runs from some very straight and accurate bowling which beat both batsmen with two consecutive balls.

No matter, we were ticking along nicely. Simon and I had a quick chat with the next pair, William and Bethan, about how well we were doing and not to push too hard, don't take any unnecessary risks and generally gave them the necessary encouragement an U9 player might wish to hear.

We shouldn't have bothered, it didn't work. Will decided he was going on a "Let's Work Bethan Till She Drops" episode, running on anything which came close and capitalising on some wayward fielding to bag as many runs as he could.

At this stage it's worth mentioning that Simon was seen doing a funny hop, twist and weird sway movement and at one stage was looking like he was about to have a coronary. Mum and Dad B-H, perched on the edge of their camping chairs attempting to calm the situation....Highly entertaining and what under 9 cricket is all about. William, no one could criticize your attitude, effort or enthusiasm and Bethan, well done for not getting run out ! We survived the excitement and were on 282 by over 12 and well on our way.

The game was far from over as Monty and James came to the crease and decided to carefully tip the game in Portsmouth's favour with their great running and super stroke play, displaying a great understanding of what was required to win the game. James soaked up the blistering attack of the final over and we won the game.

One of my favourite games this one. Well done guys, a great team effort, some great batting parings are starting to emerge, our bowling is improving all the time and no run outs says a lot about how we now play our cricket.

Great start to the season with 2 wins in a row, we play our Cousins The U8B's next week. We March On.
