Portsmouth Cricket Club - 2024 Lost lost by 12 runs

Match report Our Cousins North of Goldsmith Avenue did the double on us this year, but a big improvement on the away fixture back in May, P&S sneaking though today by just 12 runs.

Again, a lot to highlight and celebrate during our game today:-

We only lost 2 wickets during our innings, but we didn't quite score enough from the bat to make it count..

Our Captain today was Will B-H, who, I have to say was, by a long chalk the best leader so far this season, not only organising his team but generated a team spirit and even a discussion in amongst this team mates on how we were going to win the game, without a prompt for either The Manager of The Assistant manager. Chat in the field and some "walking in".

We started our innings steadily with Adam and Charlotte soaking up the P&S attack but nicking the odd single here and there. No wickets lost which everyone was delighted to see. Good start Guys.

Judith and Joe continued, with Judith sweeping balls down the leg side falling just short of the boundary, lovely timing Judith, and a pleasure to watch - Note to self for next time, adjust boundary slightly for the next match.

Sam and Shyun, Will and Pippa kept the runs flowing with P&S regularly playing a version of the game known fondly by us as "Catch The Greasy Pig" as the shiny pink nut ran through fielders' hands and wide open legs straight through and across to the boundary. Sam capitalising on the cricket version of the football Nutmeg on more then one occasion. It's tough putting yourself behind the ball when its coming at you with force.

There were a few run out opportunities available to our opposition, although I would say there were no unnecessary risks being taken today, beyond just trying to rotate the strike and push the score along. We rode our luck to some extent and got away with it.

Evidence that players are getting to grips with calling and no "Run Outs" today which highlights we are doing something right.

Harry W and Alex B-H came in as the tail with a flurry of runs to get us up to our sub total of 123. Alex cracking 3 x 4's and Harry contributing a boundary also, both players slightly frustrated not to receive too many straight balls from the final closing bowlers.

So just 2 wickets down and just 10 runs to donate to the opposition, the lowest for an opening innings this season, another good job from PCC.

Our fielding was commendable with early key moves from Shyan at Long Stop, saving certain boundaries. Will, a stop with his chest (ouch) - he really did take one for the team but didn't seem too bothered and of course Sam's great catch off Charlotte's bowing.

Our bowling effort swung the game firmly in P&S favour with a whopping 91 Extras (wides / byes / no balls and leg byes) offered to them on a dinner plate. Yum, Yum they thought. They were less generous with their extras - just 71 - Those 20 runs in Extras alone is a game changer.

We did take P&S wickets though, and in that respect our 6 scalps contributed 30 runs to our score. Three wickets for Harry W. Well done today Harry for a 3 step, controlled action with a whip from the wrist and another few mph to the speed of his delivery, very intresting and a pleasure to watch. He finished on 3 overs - 0 maidens - 22 runs - 3 wickets. No one has got more then 3 wickets in a match this season....Yet...Harry could easily do this later in the season.

Harry's wickets together with Charolltte, Shyun and Alex's in the last over helped swing the game back towards Portsmouth but P&S nibbled away at us and won the game by 12 runs.

The Good News was that we were back at our beloved St Helens Fields following 6 away games. We had received a large order of Curly Wurlies from Bookers on Friday, kindly sourced by The Chairman in anticipation of our game.

PoTM and CW's all round for:-
Alex, Harry, Joe, Charlotte, Judith, Shyun, Pippa, Sam, Will and our wiki today, Adam
Well done Guys
Many thanks to Chef Ramsey - AKA Megan who russtled up the Hot Dogs and to Simon for umpiring and weathering a blow to the head following a wayward return from deep beyond the boundary - We send our best wishes to you Simon for a speedy recovery.
Apologies were received from Oscar who was unexpectedely unavailable for this match due to a developing friendship the night before - Fill in the gaps.
