Portsmouth Cricket Club - 2024 Won By 17 Runs

Match report Our final league game of the season and another tricky team to face, away from home.

Purbrook had posted some good results during the season and were sitting mid table in the league, winning 5 of their 7 games. We wanted to finish the season on a high and had been knocked off the top of the league by our Cousins, The Portsmouth U9B Team who now had 37 points. Locks Heath U9A's were hard on our heels and both teams had games in hand; we needed to win this game to regain top and have a chance of staying somewhere near the top at the end of the season.

Our Team was again depleted due to holidays, but we were very pleased that Bethan and Tom were available to play this evening. Thank you Guys !

Purbrook won the toss and put us in to bat on another sunny evening at Purbrook Heath.

We started well with Heath and Louis amassing 32 runs between them in the first 4 overs. Good job boys. George and Tom came in as pair two and got us to 251, we were gaining in confidence all the time.

Next in were Bethan and Monty who pushed the score to 281, we were ticking and on for a good score. Oscar and Jack came in and got us to 296 for the loss of just 2 wickets. The Team was very pleased with their performance. But could we defend it? We had met teams throughout our season who regularly posted scores of over 300 runs.

Purbrook started well but by the half way point were well below the run rate required to win the game. Our bowlers had pegged them back to 25 runs short of our total, with a super Maiden over from Bethan and wickets from Monty, Oscar T and Louis. Good job guys, well done.

Purbrook were not giving up and were definitely not beaten, we had to keep going and stay focused.

Bethan came in for her second over and almost bowled another Maiden in the 14th over. Again, no wides - Father was very proud, and righty so!

The last batting pair were the backbone of the Purbrook side and suddenly we were under the cosh, it's never over till it's over. Oscar T chipped in with another wicket and although they put up a fight with a quick fire 25, bringing their score to within 17 runs of our tally, we were the victors and go joint top of the league with PCC U9B's on 37 points!

Girl of the Match was Bethan Watkinson for her super bowling and her Maiden over. Good job Bethan.

My thanks to Heath's Dad who stood in for Oscar as umpire and Tim Lunn for scoring the first innings.
