Portsmouth Cricket Club - 2024 Colts U9C - Supporting Rowans Hospice v Sarisbury Athletic B on Mon 16 May 2016 at 18.00 Confirmed
Match was Tied Game Tied

Match report Our first game of the 2016 season for the newly formed U9C Team saw us play Sarisbury U9B's at St Helens Fields.

Our warm up routine run by Coach Oscar looked very professional. We won the toss and elected to field first.

First blood to Portsmouth as George Davis poached the first wicket with the opening ball of the match.

It was great to see Louis Bingham and Rory McEwan debuting for the U9C Team as they sought to unseat the Sarisbury batsmen with their cunning bowling actions. Well done Boys !

Sarisbury settled into their innings and started to build a good score with some entertaining middle order batting. Our brave bowlers resolve was tested when a number of solid 4's and a super 6 was dispatched over the boundary rope, but we remained positive and encouraged each other to keep going.

Our XIIth man and Super Sub Dominic West came off for Rory after the first few overs. Well done to Dominic in his first competitive game !

Sarisbury posted a solid 312 for the loss of just 2 wickets off 16 overs. Could the Mighty Portsmouth U9's respond with a winning score?

Coach Oscar took the Team briefing in preparation for the Portsmouth innings. The Boys were focused and knew what they had to do to win the game.

Reversing the bowling order, brothers William and Alexander Brine-Howe strode confidently to the crease and started to post their response to Sarisbury's total. We were entertained by Alexander's stroke play, watching him dispatch the shiny red plastic orb to the boundary twice in quick succession for 4 runs. They were ticking and we started our innings brightly.

The Portsmouth total started to build and our scorer Mr Long kept us updated with the run rate which was consistently above Sarisbury's, but not by much...

The next pair of batsmen made their way to the 16 yard battleground. Charlie Long and his partner Rory McEwan built on the opening batsmen's great start. Charlie with four superb 4's and Rory partnering him with some quick running between the wickets.

Next up were Monty Goodfellow and Louis Bingham. Monty displayed some excellent communication with his calls of "Wait!" (including good, clear hand signals) when there was no run to be had and Louis, with his orthodox defensive batting technique, protecting his valuable wicket and frustrating the punishing Sarisbury bowling attack.

The pressure was really on when the final pair of Portsmouth batsmen took to the crease for the last two overs. The Sarisbury bowlers looked to have taken the game from us. Mr Long confirmed that we had dropped slightly below our target run rate, so a win for PCC was looking unlikely. But we were not disheartened !

Huw Bailey and George Davis' task was clear - we needed runs and we needed them fast ! They did however start slowly, taking time to get their eye in, the Sarisbury bowler pinning us down to dot balls in the 15th over with only a few loose balls to give us hope.

Then, out of nowhere, Huw's quick running between the stumps re-energised us and we were within striking distance of our target, but still falling short on the run rate.

The last over and just a few more loose balls from the opposition, all of which had to be re bowled....the penultimate ball of the innings was struck soundly by George for 4 runs.

Portsmouth needed 6 runs to win the game. Could The Boy Davis heave the last delivery towards Chichester and over the boundary to win the game?

The Portsmouth and Sarisbury supporters were urging their teams on, it was chaos on the boundary as the lone Sarisbury bowler took his mark and prepared to make his last delivery.....

No one could quite believe what happened next, with 5 cheeky runs resulting in a Tied result !

Well done everyone !
