Portsmouth Cricket Club - 2024 Won By 3 Runs

Match report Is Cricket Boring? Not if you follow Portsmouth's U9C Team.

Portsmouth lost the toss and fielded first on a drizzly Monday evening up at Ridge Meadow.

The long boundary and wet conditions meant that the number of 4's were few and far between, with a few slip-up's when we were fielding.

George H's opening over was a blinder. 6 dot balls pegged the Hambledon score back from the start, we were on a roll.

Heath was up next and chipped in a tidy 2 overs for very few runs.

Monty G had a field day and managed 3 wickets and Charlie L was on a hat-trick on
over 9....in the end he came away with two. Well done boys, great effort!

George D assisted his team with his long run up's which started from somewhere close to Petersfield - good bowling tonight George D, only 3 wides tonight and just 3 runs scored off your two overs.

We kept up the pressure and by the 13th over had pegged our opposition back to just 241 runs. Unfortunately, a few over throws and loose bowling in the last 3 overs saw Hambledon gain an additional 37 runs and they finished on 278 for the loss of 7 wickets. Not a bad score.

Our team talk at the end of the 1st innings consisted of reminders that wide balls should be left alone and a focus on some "Sensible Cricket".

We managed to keep within our crease, most of the time, and avoided "going for a wander" to reach the few wide balls Hambledon did send over, so well done there boys. But I'm not sure about the Sensible Cricket...

It was, however entertaining, but a bit Mad. Geoffrey Boycott would have certainly had something to say about some of our run outs as we looked to take our chances and build our score.

We did post the most singles in any match we had played to date with Heath, James, Jack and Oscar racing between the stumps, keeping our run rate well above Hambledon's, from the start.

By over 15 and one over to go we were just 10 runs ahead. But Hambledon had scored 14 off their last over so we needed to be very careful about how we played our cricket; 1 wicket would put us on the back foot....we could even loose the game.

Over 16 and the last 6 balls saw runs scored off every ball for no loss of wickets. Although we didn't need to run on the last ball, we did, and nearly lost the game, save a wide of the mark return to the stumps by the Hambledon fielder....we were safe and won the match by 3 runs. Complete Chaos, but great fun and very amusing for the watching parents.

MOTM - George H for his first Maiden Over, great effort George.
MOTM - Monty G for his 3 tidy wickets, well done Monty.

Thanks to Mrs Hill for collecting the match fees and Simon for umpiring.

That's 5 in a row now, well done boys !
