Portsmouth Cricket Club - 2021 Lost

Match report It's not winning or loosing that's important, it's how we play our game....

We lost today, on a windy but sunny July evening. Ten Portsmouth U9 players got a full game of cricket and the Match Tea was definitely worth playing for !

We welcomed a new XIIth Man / Super Sub Ruben F into our squad this evening and promptly lent him to the opposition, as they were short!

Ruban was expecting to come along to watch and support his team, bowl an over and take part in our fielding but, together with Dominic W, ended up playing for the opposition who were 2 players short tonight. Well done boys for showing great spirit. One of our boys commented, "...it was a bit weird playing for the other team....", but boy did you guys do well.

We delayed the start of the match for 30mins in the hope that the missing players would arrive but in the end decided to allow Petersfield bat first, hoping they would arrive later. It was not to be and both Ruban and Dominic got a game of cricket for our opposition.

Petersfield posted a tough target for us to overhaul, with quite a number of boundaries and a few 6's; our bowling effort was thwarted and despite a brave 30 run partnership between James B and Heath M in the last 4 overs, we fell short. We did at least get 301 runs which was a great effort.

It was great to see tonight's Captain Alexander and Vice Captain William B-H back at the crease, both thumping runs to the boundary. Your partnership brought us 30 runs to kick start the Portsmouth innings. Well done boys !

Rory Mc and Thomas L joined in the fun as a batting pair. It was difficult for you guys to score runs as you faced the largest number of wides and no balls this evening, so hard for you to get bat on ball. Keep Going and don't forget to run when there are runs to be had !

Louis hit a super boundary for 4 runs during his visit to the crease. When it came to bowling, Louis' super "loopy" pitching was, at times unplayable for the Petersfield batsmen. A good all-round effort and great progress!

Rory Mc chipped in with a wicket of his own, good bowling Rory.

It was definitely a game where "Scoreboard Pressure" played a part in the game with our batsmen chasing a big score, we took some risks and we lost a few runs due to run outs. No one can blame you for not trying to win the game.

Our Super Subs Ruban F and Dominic W batted valiantly with Dominic bagging a wicket for Petersfield, well done boys !

We learnt how to identify "The Danger End" when batting and discussed who's call it was to make when deciding when to run, lets build on this next time so we keep the run outs to a minimum.

Man of The Match - Thomas L for his running between the stumps and to his supporters for the encouragement offered to him to engage first gear. Well done everyone ! Tom - Don't forget to tell your mates and the whole family !

Spirit of Cricket Award - Dominic W and Ruban F for playing for the opposition when they were short of players. Good Job, I hope you enjoyed the game.

My thanks to Tracy and Tim Hill for organising the Match Teas and colleting the Match Fees, Rory W for scoring and Oscar for Umpiring and running The Team.
