Easton v Portsmouth Cricket Club - 2024 1st XI on Sat 24 May 2008 at 1300
Portsmouth Cricket Club - 2024 Won Easton 116, Portsmouth 118/3
Match report
Another comfortable victory for the Portsmouth CC 1st XI, although E & M made them work for their wickets early on. While Daisy and Sajid did make in roads into the E & M batting line up, and repeatedly made the batsmen play and miss, they both bowled slightly short at times with the E & M batsmen just looking for survival. However the scoring rate wasn’t bad, largely through the batsmen’s fortune over skill, but at 75/3 from 17 E & M would have been pleased with their progress despite not looking in control.
Portsmouth stuck to their task well though and an impressive spell from Kam (2/29 from 8) in tandem with Jamie Scott (3/26 from 7) left the E & M batting line up in disarray. Kam Managed to make full use of the surprising pace and bounce the wicket offered, while Jamie had a very rusty start by his own standards, and was close to being pulled from the attack, when suddenly everything clicked into place and he set his season rolling with his last 4 over’s returning 3/3 including a sharp catch from Sammy low to his left at 1st slip.
Nav was then introduced and made a controversial breakthrough as a delivery clipped the stumps before hitting dans pads and returning onto the stumps causing some confusion, but ultimately a dismissal. Daisy the returned to mop up the tail, bowling much fuller this time and hitting the stumps as the E & M tail backed away, earning himself figures of 3/22 one ball short of completing his ten over’s.
In reply following an well time cover drive, Matt Scott chopped on for 4 giving a glimmer of hope to E & M, however that was all it was and a solid partnership of 97 between James Moon and Nav took Portsmouth close before Moon, looking to finish the game quickly, chipped high to mid off, following an innings that saw him growing in confidence. Nav remained not out with an organised 61 not out which included a number of devastating blows. Sam came in and got a high full toss, which he lost in the trees and only managed to chip to cover, before Dan finished the job with 7 not out.
While Portsmouth won comfortably, they will be disappointed to have not sealed maximum points, and know that standards have to continually be raised in order to meet the targets they have set!!
