Portsmouth Cricket Club - 2024 Won by 59 runs

Match report Outstanding bowling and fielding contributions from the whole team helped us secure the first win of the season for the Mighty Under 9A Team at home to a well drilled Sarisbury.

The day started with drizzle and overcast skies but ended with sunshine and a few Champaign Moments to brighten up our Bank Holiday Monday.

PCC lost the toss and were put into bat. We also lost our opener with the first ball of the game and then 4 balls later gifted Sarisbury another wicket with a run out. Not a great start...Indeed, the Manager was wondering what was going on, was all that winter training for nothing he wondered, we held our nerve.

Having bouncebackability in the U9A Team is a key attribute and so we set about grinding out a response.

Charlie and William posted a solid 29 off their 4 overs, well done boys !

In came Heath and Alex to push the score up to 256 with the loss of just 1 wicket, Heath scoring his trademark 4 and cheeky 2's with quick running between the stumps. Alex providing a solid partner in keeping the score ticking along.

James and Monty were up next and continued to entertain the watching PCC and Sarisbury supporters. Their solid performance took us up to 279 for the loss of just 1 wicket. We were fighting back well.

The final pair, Huw and George faced the remaining 4 overs with a brave batting performance, George facing some very quick pace bowling in the final over with no further losses, well done boys !

We tallied 301 for 4 off our 16 overs. Would it be enough?

Our response was awesome with Huw nabbing the first of 11 PCC wickets, pinning back our opposition to just 7 runs in the first 4 overs.

James pitched in with 3 wickets including a caught and bowled - Good job James! Monty posted a very solid performance giving away just 4 runs and no wides or no balls off his 2 overs. Outstanding.

Our Super Subs really did turn the screws on Sarisbury in overs 9 and 10.

Bethan and Tom came on to peg our opposition back again taking wickets and running out batsmen with tenacity and quick thinking fielding. It was great to watch. Well done guys ! Maybe the winter training had been worth it after all...

Alex and Heath finished off the bowling with Monty and Bethan both running batsmen out in the last few overs, leaving Sarisbury on just 242.

Player of The Match goes to:-

Bethan for her amazing bowling, fielding and safe hands behind the wicket.
Tom for his first wicket of his U9 career and well pitched balls.
James for his Caught and Bowled.

My thanks to Simon and Oscar for running the team, Helen and Chris for the match teas and to all our U9 supporters who turned up today.
