Match report Flashing Bails saw us go top of the U9A League tonight in our final U9 match of the 2017 outdoor season at St Helens, it was just like the IPL....

As it was our last match we thought we'd treat ourselves to 2 sets of brand new battery powered red flashing bails and see if we could knock em off and make them blink.

They came off 12 times in a very good natured game against our cousins in the B Team on yet another sunny Monday evening in July. What a season it's been.

First shout went to Monty who had both the flashing fantastics on the ground only to be called as a no-ball. Unlucky Monty. His next ball was hit high into the safe hands of James.

So it was left to Alex to get the first proper flicker, bowling the B's number 4, cleaning him out good and proper. Bails off, well bowled.

A further catch in over 6 from another pair of safe hands saw Bethan bag one for Will. We had a few missed opportunities when 3 A team fielders went crashing into each other, searching for that elusive 3rd catch, it gave us all something to think about as we went about pegging the B's back through their middle order, Alex finally taking one cleanly off George D's bowling in font of the watching crowd.

Harry mopped up the tail with a super strike to add to his earlier clean bowled effort in over 9. The B's finished with a valiant 230.

Standout moments for the B's batting included Rory and Tom facing down Alex's thundering attack with both boys keeping a very straight bat to defend their wickets and a super 4 from Rio to frustrate the A's quest for glory.

The B's were quick to respond and we were 2 down by over 3 with just 214 on the board... and then controversy whilst bowling against Alex when the bails didn't budge following a straight bowled pitch from Ethan Paul which hit the stumps. Not Out. This happened 3 times during the game! Conspiracy theorists were hard at work trying to work out why...Super Glue? Chewing Gum? I think it must have been the pair of 12v car batteries which had held them secure, who knows...I'm sure it will be talked about for many years to come.

Newcomer Bertie Jaques, in his first game for the A's, assisted the A Team run scoring effort with some quick running, encouraged by his batting partner Will.

Then it was Tom's turn to be wicket keeper, but why was he so close to the stumps? He was clearly trying to squirrel those new bails down his trouser leg...??! Maybe not.

It's worth mentioning that James' mum took till over 11 in the second innings to notice that we had our new flashing stump toppers. You can imagine the laughter, come on Mrs B, keep up!

So we finished our league season with a win, lots of giggles, shook hands with our cousins and trooped off to the pavilion to chomp through our hot dogs, crisps and cake.

Well done everyone and a great way to finish the season.

We go top of the league tonight with other teams below us still to play....
