Portsmouth Cricket Club - 2024 U11 Daring v Locks Heath B on Wed 02 May 2018 at 6.00pm Confirmed (West)
Portsmouth Cricket Club - 2024 Won by 61 runs

Match report It's been exactly 8 months since our last outdoor game. Yes, 2nd September 2017 was our last contest - remember our Kids v Parents match when Glyn nearly got bowled by Bethan? We eat burgers, drank pop and basked in the autumn sun whilst listening to Justin Bieber. Memories - savor and cherish them. We were entertained by 31 Under 9's and celebrated our 2017 season. 234 long dark days later - we had arrived at our first game at St Helens.

With a very busy season ahead of us and weather uncertainties playing on our minds, we have to make every game count. At around 1pm today St Helens had received around 8hrs of rain, most of it torrential. It didn't look good for our first contest of the season.
We have a saying in our squad, always assume the game is on, unless told otherwise. We call our weekday games at 3pm, it came and went, no word - Game On !
We also believe in #getthegameon and work hard to make it happen - All credit to Rick Marston, our groundsman - he worked wonders this afternoon and even managed to get a cut of the outfield completed before we marched into battle against Locks Heath at 6pm, sun peeking through the thick grey blanket of cloud covering much of the Solent and Portsea Island.

This year we are The Mighty U11B's. We can just about get our small hands around a 4 3/4oz cricket ball, pink this year, easier to see. We also wear pads now and it makes us run funny.....and a helmet Barry Sheen wouldn't look out of place wearing, it wobbles a bit cos it's my older brothers' hand-me-down helmet. We share some of our kit with our friends because we forget and loose stuff, that's because we are only 10 years old....

Delighted that we have retained many of our U9A squad from last year and recruited some new players. Our U11B squad now stands at over 20 players - Welcome everyone.

Portsmouth's U11B Captain today was Alex Brine-Howe, assisted and supported by James Boorah. Alex won the toss and elected to put Locks Heath into bat. Good choice Alex.
Some tight bowling from our opening 4 bowlers - Heath, Alex, Bethan and Charlotte saw Locks Heath reach just 22 runs, but no wickets yet.... just 3 wide balls between them. Good job guys, winter training looked like it was paying off.
Will-i-am got the break-through we deserved in over 5 - bowling the Locks Heath number 3 batsmen with a good clean ball.
George, Monty and James took their turn and by over 8 had pinned Locks Heath back to just 33 runs. We were ticking.

Following my preamble, I omitted to say that one of our own wasn't able to make it tonight and the ensuing scramble to pluck a quality player out of the cold, damp Portsmouth air was proving very difficult. Luckily, Sam Shaw came to our rescue, or should I say Mrs Davis was dispatched to rescue him from 2hrs of maths homework and assist us in our quest for glory. Within 10 minutes of arriving he had saved 2 boundaries ! Don't forget to tell your teacher Sam.

Charlie, our wiki, was lively behind the stumps, stopping the odd stray ball as it passed through, he also bagged a run-out to take our wicket tally to two. Safe Hands Charlie, well done. Monty came good with his easy on the eye loopy pitched balls, catching out the Locks Heath number 4 batsman, clean bowled. Bethan bagged our fourth wicket with the help of James who collected, thank you very much. James doesn't drop many catches.
It's worth mentioning Alex's 3 overs, 2 maidens, just 4 runs, 0 wickets. No wides or no balls - very impressive. Actually, we were all impressive today, a good team spirit as well.
Locks Heath finished on 85 for 4 (adjusted, following the Portsmouth innings the score was 100 - 4....more of that later).

We drank our squash, the scorers were served hot sweet tea by Nikki and the team discussed how they were going to overhaul the Locks Heath score, at least that's what I thought they were doing.

Scoring can be tricky at the best of times and volunteers are always better then 10 pressed men (or women), so it was with relief that I saw Chris Goodfellow scribbling away, recording our progress. With new rules to absorb, it makes for an interesting start to the season. At U11B level, teams now have 5 runs added to their opponents' score for loosing a wicket, rather having it deducted from their own score. In previous years the batting score started at 200 and was adjusted as wickets fell and runs scored - you knew where you stood and the second team batting had their target to aim for. This year, the Locks Heath score at the end of their innings (85 in today's match) might not be their final score. Any Portsmouth wickets which fell would be added to the Locks Heath score......whatever, I wasn't scoring tonight so left it all to Chris and the Locks Heath scorer. There didn't appear to be any bickering going on, they were playing nicely so I left them to it.

The Portsmouth innings started solidly with twins Will and Alex putting on an entertaining 13 runs - those pads take a bit of getting used to but Will was soon back to his best, taking every opportunity to push the score. Great to watch.
In came George and Sam and boy did we get a treat. In his first over George unexpectedly heaved a ball in the direction of Chichester Cathedral sending it sailing over his umpiring brother, skimming Oscar's head for 4 runs and then another 4 off a full toss, perfectly timed to mid-on and the boundary in his next over; finishing with a cheeky 2, plus another 4 in over 8. Good job George. Sam wasn't hanging around either - maths is his strongest subject so decided to add to the Portsmouth tally in multiples of 4 and some quick singles to keep the score ticking over. Why not?
Talking of 4's, Bethan had her fun, as did Charlie and James with 4, 20 and 8 scored respectively. Charlie off the mark from ball 3 of his innings, James striking out with Heath in the final few overs and Monty digging one out, sending it rumbling down to fine leg and over the waiting white boundary rope. Bethan's innings peppered with singles kept the strike rotating, all contributing to seal the match in our favor.
We welcomed Charlotte to our team today in her first game for us. She showed resilience and determination eeking out 4 runs against the equally determined Locks Heath bowling attack. Well done Charlotte, more of the same please in our next match on Sunday.
We scored a very respectable 141 for the loss of just 3 wickets, 80 runs off the bat.

So, after our most excellent scorers had adjusted the scores for wickets lost, Portsmouth's score became 161-3 and Locks Heath 100-4. We won by 61 runs. You have to show your workings to get full marks; one for Sam's maths teacher I reckon.

Player of the Match and a packet of smarties each:-
***** Bethan - For her solid batting performance and improvement since last year. Bowls straight, pitches it up and she can bat....one to watch.
***** Alex - For his 2 maiden overs - Remember all those Beamers last year Alex? You have found your line and length, well done and more of the same please in the next match.

Thanks to Nikki for the v healthy match tea, Simon for running the team today, Oscar for umpiring, Chris G for scoring and of course Jeannette for collecting the match fees.
