Portsmouth Cricket Club - 2024 Won by 25 runs

Match report Festina Lente

Our third game of the season against Purbrook was something of an epic contest as we increased the team to 10, and brought in two new players - Veer and Max to bolster our existing team.

Captain Reuben, lost the toss and Purbrook decided to bat. Some aggressive batting got our opponents off to a good start, but not without some luck, as two inside edges of Heath’s bowling on another day might have taken wickets.

Thomas, Joseph and George bowled particularly well, taking four wickets between them and slowing the run rate, but all the bowlers contributed, restricting Purbrook to 149 and taking 10 wickets.

Two special mentions to Veer who went behind the stumps for the first time as our wicketkeeper and did a sterling job and James who took a brilliant catch at cow corner, unfortunately, it was off a no ball.

After a quick change around the boys commenced the run chase. Heath (12), Edward (12) and James (17) top-scored, but not reflected in these figures are the runs scored thanks to some impressive running between the stumps in the byes, leg byes and wides, or the quality of some of the shots played.

The game remained on a knife-edge right to the end, which is a credit to both sides and the excellent standard of cricket that was played. After our 20 overs, however, the boys had managed to clock up 174 for 7 wickets, winning the game by 25 runs. So a tough game, that pushed both teams.

The man of the match award was difficult to award as everyone impressed, but for his performance with both the bat and ball, it went to Joseph. Well done!

One small apology to William and Alex, unfortunately, I have had to combine your stats. I will see if I can change this, but well played to both of you.

A huge thank you to our supporters, our brilliant scorer and our opponents for an enjoyable game.

Finally, our next game is at home, at the unearthly hour of 9am on a Sunday morning. We will be playing the standard 8 players.

***Update - I have just received a message from Purbrook, did anyone leave a folding chair at their pitch as one has been found!***
