Match report Ab uno disce omnes

Our fourth game of the season was a real nail-biter as the boys faced Petersfield.

Captain George lost the toss and was asked to field. Playing in sunny, but blustery conditions the boy produced their best bowling yet with some accurate and pacey deliveries. About half a dozen times the ball narrowly cleared the stumps and one run out was not allowed (apologies about that) as the bails had already been knocked off. Pick of the bowlers was Heath 9/2, Thomas 5/2 and Edward 17/2.

The fielding was mainly businesslike, although in places in the middle of the game we lost concentration leading to a few additional runs in byes and over-throws. A highlight of the fielding was a brilliant catch by Harry who was fielding at extra cover and had to do his best superman impression.

At the end of the innings, Petersfield clocked up 143 for six wickets.

After a quick change around the boys set about overhauling this total. Heath and Thomas made a good start against some tough bowling, while William and George defended their wickets against some aggressive deliveries. One highlight was a majestic pull shot played by George which ran away for four.

At midpoint through the Portsmouth innings, the score was neck and neck, so as Harry and Adam went to the crease, the instruction from the dressing was to speed up the run rate. The boys responded to this with an array of boundaries and quick singles, some which could even be described as kamikaze! As the final pairing of Reuben and Edward took to pitch Portsmouth still required nearly 20 runs. Some excellent boundaries and running, saw the boys reach 165 at the end of their overs. Top scorers were Heath (17), Adam (11), Harry (19) and Edward (15).

A huge thanks to our coach Jack, scorer Tim, all the parents for braving the wind to cheer on the boys and Nikki for supplying bacon rolls as our match teas – an inspired and popular choice.
