Match report Fine weather rolling on for our 2nd round cup match vs Burridge. James won the toss and chose to bat. Pre-match team talk was about rotating the strike and hitting the bad balls, and that's exactly how Harry and Xavier responded in a brilliant opening stand that took on Burridge's best bowlers on a good track. The pair of them were really positive, and set us a really strong foundation at the halfway point of 84-0. Sam, James N and James V didn't quite match their momentum but kept us rolling towards a strong total, before Jude and George powered us towards the end. Jude's 3 fours in 3 balls included an absolutely classic cover drive that had umpires and spectators purring. This was easily our strongest batting performance this season, and great to see kids putting their hands up to open the batting and playing positively. 157-4 was the total, with pressure from runs on the board on the opposition from the outset.

Opening with spin, Portsmouth started out tight, the first 20 balls from Harry and Xavier going for just 17 runs, and Xavier picking up a wicket. With short square boundaries, it was a day for pace off the ball, although Jude and Sam were both parsimonious. James Vick, after going for runs in his first over, came back later to bowl his full allocation, picking up 2 wickets and going for very few runs as the required rate climbed. Similarly, Alex bounced back from an expensive start to bowl the 19th for just 2 runs, a great recovery. For a patch in the middle, we had a bit of a wobble, bowling too many extras and with a bit of desperation in the field, where calm heads will help us in tighter matches, but Sam closed out the match to send us through to the next round. Jasper, fresh from the being in the wars on Monday, was really good behind the stumps.

It was a match played in excellent spirit, much needed after Monday. Well played all, and on to the next round!
