Portsmouth Cricket Club - 2024 Won Semi Finalists
Match report
Under 9 Tournament - Portsmouth CC took 12 players to Locks Heath for a 6-A-Side Tournament on Sunday 17th July.
Twelve teams entered from the South East Hampshire District, all from the U9B League.
Made up of mainly U9C team players, we formed two PCC teams - The Anderson's and Bairstow's.
The format was - Batting in pairs for 2 overs. Bowlers took 1 over each. Scores started on 100 and each team faced two others in a mini league. The winner of each league going through to the semi finals and then a final.
Larissa V-C started by organising us all and Tom double checked that we were all playing on the correct pitch. Dominic's Dad led the warm ups and got us all focused and ready to play. The Tournament started.
Team Bairstow, led by Heath and Vice Captain Tom faced Locks Heath B and Burridge B in their league. They played valiantly with stand-out performances from Larissa V-C taking 3 wickets in 1 over including a caught and bowled. Charlie L doubled the score in his two overs in the first game. Will B-H took a very tricky catch and his brother Alex B-H had the opposition batsmen guessing with his pace bowling.
Game two for the Bairstow Team saw a much improved display with better communication, quick running between the stumps and bad balls being punished. Will and Charlie again contributed significantly to the runs. Most players took a wicket in game two, so another great all-round performance.
Meanwhile over on the Red pitch, Team Anderson led by George D and Vice Captain Huw took on Hambledon B and Locks Heath C and beat both teams compressively by 30 runs. It was really difficult to pick out specific players for comment as everyone contributed in all aspects of the game. Louis, Dominic, Oscar, Monty, Huw and George D all played very well, cracking 4's, taking wickets and fielding out of their skins.
It was true to say that having won both games Team Anderson were a little bit (over) excited.
We stuffed our faces with burgers, ice cream, sweets, pop, wrestled with each other and made cardboard helmets from the flat packs provided by the Tournament organisers. The players looked very smart in their purple helmets!
Andersons's were through to the semi final against Hambledon A's - This was going to be a very tough match.
We lost the toss (again, for the 3rd time !) and were put into bat. Our first batting pair George D and Huw went about building our score. The game started slowly, contrasting our first two matches where we scored freely, and we lost some early wickets to run outs and playing onto our stumps.
We were being pegged back by the Hambledon bowlers and their fielding was very sharp. More wickets fell and we finished our innings on 118. Was this a high enough score to defend?
Our response was fantastic, with equally good bowling and fielding.
Louis' loopy, spin bowling attracted positive comments from the opposition coach, completely unplayable by the Hambledon batsmen. A one handed catch from Monty, maximum reach, the ball flying though the air like lightening towards the boundary for 4 runs, stuck like glue and changed the game again, just as Hambledon were taking charge. It raised our spirits and gave us belief that we could put up a fight and win the game.
We continued to take wickets and by the final over the teams were level. It was very tense and reminiscent of our very first game of the season against Sarisbury where we tied the match....if we could peg the Hambledon batsmen back and take another wicket, we could win.
Unfortunately, the Hambledon batsmen went rampant in the final over with some super 4's and a couple of whopping 6's. They finished us off and we lost the game by 30 runs.
Hambledon A's then went on to win the Tournament.
So, to loose to the winners of the tournament in the semi finals with 12 other teams in the competition was a great effort for the Anderson's and well done to Team Bairstow for your spirited performance.
I hope you all enjoyed the day !
Man of the Tournament - Team Anderson goes to Oscar Thompson for his all round consistency in his batting /bowling and fielding.
Man / Girl of the Tournament - Team Bairstow goes to Charlie Long for his great batting and tenacious bowling. Larissa Vaughan-Carpenter for her amazing bowling effort of 3 wickets in 1 over including her caught and bowled.
My thanks to Tim Lunn / Rory West / Tim Bayley / Chris Brine-Howe for assisting with running the teams, scoring, umpiring and Jeanette for collecting the Tournament fees.
