Match report The 1st real test of the season saw Portsmouth respond with an infatic victory over previous level peggers Gosport. Losing the toss and being put into bat after the Gosport captain clearly fell for the mind games in the paper the previous day, insisting Portsmouth wanted to continue to bowl first. Portsmouths make shift opening pair of Farjan and Jason Noble around on 90 in quick time for the first wicket, both wickets fell soon after however with farjan making 64 and Noble an imppressive 25 on his return to the side. That brought overseas player Nav and captain Sam to the crease, while Nav dominated the strike Sam was happy to play 2nd fiddle picking up ones and twos, Nav takin advantage of some poor bowling from his opposite number from Queensland whos left arm spin contained 2 bad bas an over in his 1st spell. Nav looked fluent before being dismissed by a sharp leg side stumping for 54. Sam continued to rotate the strike picking up a run a ball with Dan now at the crease settling into the conditions. A controlled innings from Dan took Portsmouth closer to there own target of 250 before a sharp piece of fielding left him just short coming back for a 2nd. Wickets then fell in the final stages as Portsmouth launched an attack on the Gosport bowlers with Sajid connecting with some explosive blows, before Sam was dismissed just his 50 looking to follow suit. While the bowlers chipped in with some interesting running and time runinng out Portsmouth finally settled for 258.

In reply Gosport picked up early boundaries as the top order managed to pick the gap between slip and gully, or over all of them with surprising consisitancy,but as usual the Portsmouth opening pair of Sajid and Daisy squeezed a couple of early wickets, despite Daisy struggling somewhat for rythym and Saj seeming more intent on make freinds with Gosports import! As fortune continued to favour the brave the young Queenslander continued to gamble his wicket despite clearly being the only played capable of making a game of it, and at the half way point at around 110/3 Gosport where just bout in the game and Portsmouth were becoming ragged in the field. After a "quiet chat" from the captain Portsmouth returned to the field and with Nav now into his spell of off spin things started to happen. Firstly a catch went to Sam at slip, and then an over or two later Nav struck again, and again, and again!! A hat trick left Gosport line up on its knees and with Richie proving an excellent foil at the other end Portsmouth showed their class and ripped through the opposition. Richie taking 2 wickets including that of the overseas, and Nav ending up with 5! The final play was again the 2 bowlers, as Nav sharply fielded at gully and through over the top at Richies end where he fremoved the bails, 6 from 6 for Portsmouth!!

A great day for Nav - 5 wickets, a hat trick, 54, and a run out.

Portsmouth showed it doesnt matter whether they bat or bowl 1st, and such a convincing win over 3rd placed opposition with a number of key players out, they have the quality and the depth to pick up the silverware come september.
