Portsmouth Cricket Club - 2024 Won US 148, Portsmouth 152/2

Match report The 2nd local derby in as many weeks was always likely to big a difficult game against United Services with a strong batting line up and experienced bowling, and with rain about it looked as if the weather could be a serious factor.

Portsmouth won the toss and put US into bat and from the start it was clear that one team wanted the victory more than the other!! With a number of players having history with both clubs people had points to prove and none more than Daisy who had just made the switch to the golded side of town. Bowling undoubtedly the quickest spell the southern league has seen this season in any division (including probably the best bouncer ever seen at St Helens) Daisys relentless pace and control tested the technique and the helmets of the US top order. Backed up as usual by Sajids movement through the air and off the seam, Portsmouth stayed patient and chipped away restricting the runs despite some inivative and outrageous fields and squeezed the US top order into making mistakes. The slow run rate of US meant that despite having wickets in the bank they were always going to have to put their foot down and with no weaknesses in the Pompey bowling attack they were unable to do so, limping through to 148. All the bowlers hitting impressive areas throughout in a disciplined show which was only let down but a couple of chances going to the grass.

In reply things didnt start well with Scotty falling to a superb catch at deep cover, but with Nav and Farjan at the crease Pompey moved along swiftly sending the US bolwers to all parts of the ground, Farjan hitting boudaries both left and right handed. Taking one risk too many... again, Farjan fell but by now the victory was in the bag, and with Sam joining Nav in the middle, the 2 tidied up and the game was finished in quick time 2 wickets down in the 24th over, with Nav left just short of a hundred with a magnificent 92*.

Portsmouth will be relieved to have got through the day as the rain threatened throughout, and 21 points in the bag sends them top of the table as Hartney whitney lose in a rain affected game at Bournemouth. US were clearly the strongest side Portsmouth have played so far this season but an 8 wicket win shows the gap between gold and bronze is as big as ever.

More catching practice in the week for some of the boys and a trip to Salisbury next week to face S. Wilts 2s. Now 7 out of 7, Pompey are one of only 2 teams in the SEPCL to have a 100% record, can silver side Rowledge last the distance!!!
