Match report Sorry this is a few days late, but mad weekends all round!!! Batting first surrounded by a lovely South Downs setting, Portsmouth got off to a steady but rapid start with Adam Heyes and Joe Eales brilliantly putting together 107 for the first wicket. Each batsman retiring unbeaten on 40. Well organised partnerships kept the run rate to a competitive level particularly with Joseph Stretton’s quick-fire 22 not out and Tim Pilkie Rogers chipping in with 3 clever boundaries in the final over resulting in a total of 168 for 2. A strong Liphook side came out of the traps needing more than 8 an over and raced to 50 for no wicket in less than 6 overs before George Mckenzie got the important breakthrough with a fine yorker followed up by a superbly brave caught & bowled by the in form and pacey Scarlett Thomas to dismiss their dangerous opener and captain. Adam Heyes with his clever accurate off-spin and Iori Howells with a maiden and dangerous late swing slowed the run rate down mid innings before Joe Eales did his Jimmy Anderson impression by bowling 2 brilliant maiden overs. Throughout the innings, one of our 2 young U13 starlet’s Alex Higson kept wicket like an old pro giving nothing away having effortlessly deputised for Rohan Walters who was otherwise committed to Mamma Mia duties. By now Liphook were falling off the pace which was further knocked by captain for the night Joseph Stretton’s menacing in swingers and our young star William Lunn who, having just missed out on a difficult catch, bowled 3 overs of unplayable quality bagging himself 3 wickets for 13 runs to get us over the line. A fine effort under pressure. The previously unbeaten Liphook finishing on 132 for 8 for a happy journey home!
