Match report Temet nosce

There are many things I could say about this game - the quality of the fielding and batting, but I want to start by talking about the energy and determination around the game. Yes I know I often use this line, but the boy turned up fizzing with expectation, because they knew that this game mattered, that this game would probably determine the league. They also recognised that in Waterlooville we were facing a first-class opposition, who are capable of batting with aggression, bowling with precision and turning the run tap well and truly off.

So the boys from the outset to give 100 per cent. Under the captaincy of Joseph, the boys won the toss and decided to bat. Fielding a team of 8 with two super subs the batting line up was a little compressed, but Charles (11) and Thomas got the team off to a solid start, against some tough bowling. Next up Heath and Joseph. Heath, played a slew of impressive shots top-scoring with 27, while Joseph (6) supported him with some great running and good defensive work. In the middle of the game, we played George B (3), Goerge D (10) and Harry, who scored a quick 16, before we finished with Reuben (21) and Edward (11). In total, the boys clocked up an impressive 135 runs from the bat for just 3 wickets, which we knew was a defendable total.

After a quick change around, the boys took to the field, knowing that they need to keep things tight. Heath (1) and Charles opened the bowling, with Heath taking a wicket. Up next Thomas and Joseph (1) who produced some lovely line and length deliveries, taking another wicket. So far so good. Then came the pairing of George D and Harry (3). While George pinned our opponents down at one end Harry decided to bowl a mixture of spin and pace. This highly unorthodox style though was rewarded with three wickets, before Reuben (1) and Edward (2) finished up the innings, with three wickets between them.

Importantly our fielding was significantly better than the last time our two sides met. Yes, there were still a couple of overthrows and misfields, however, we had learnt much from the last game along with the extra coaching from Shane and Co to ensure we got the basics right.

In total Waterlooville had been restricted to 141, while the Portsmouth score moved on to 175, thanks to the eight-wicket haul. A good result against an excellent opposition.

My thanks to Jack for coaching and scoring and to all the parents who cheered the boys on. I know I speak for all when I say how proud I am of the performance that the boys put in and so on to our last league game against Havant.
