Match report Gorgeous weather for our home match against a good Purbrook side, Alanah our captain winning the toss with a well played scissors cutting Purbrook's paper. Sample quote from Dexter pre-match "If I don't field, am I not allowed to bat?" suggested some potential challenges in the match, and the intensity in the field wasn't quite there compared with our last match: 2 sets of 4 overthrows and some missed run-outs; but there were stand-outs, particularly Jude who took one good catch and almost took a worldie as well. Alanah and JV topped the bowling with 2 wickets each, and Alanah could have had more but for a couple of dropped catches. Despite our struggles, tight bowling from Alex, James N and Alanah meant that Purbrook 94-8 looked very beatable.

In reply though, Purbrook had plenty of firepower in their bowling, James N out first ball to their opener. My decision to bowl from the other end of the pitch from usual due to the boundary size backfired spectacularly as the sun lowered in the sky to directly behind the bowler's arm (I won't be doing that again), making things more difficult in our innings. It was good to see the kids putting pressure on the field, but 3 run outs didn't help us and we were 89-6 coming into the last pair, against two of their best bowlers. Despite losing a couple of wickets, George and Jude held on, with Jude playing the shot of the match, driving for four from the last ball.

A good challenging match, and plenty of teachable moments in this one - I think the main point would be that if you're not active in the field for an over, you're not doing it right - we need to get the kids backing up throws, getting to the stumps etc - it's not all about the person fielding the ball! I'll try to work through this with them on Monday,
