Match report A most beautiful summers evening in a beautiful setting . Portsmouth lost the toss and were invited to field first. This was a relief with several of the Portsmouth players having played school matches that day already in the blistering heat. Mad dogs , English men and cricket playing school kids meaning there were several heat sapped faces at the pre match warm up.

There was certainly no lack of energy from Jude and George however when they opened the bowling. Both bowling fast keeping the score down from Fareham’s openers to 25-1 after the first four with a good “clean bowled” from Jude in the first over.

It was a really nice change to play on a grass strip with Jake tempted to try out his leg spin taking an excellent 4 wickets for 7 runs (3 overs), supported well by Alex who bowled his pair for 7 runs and 1 wicket.

The next pair of Jamie and Milo kept the home side quiet with Jamie bowling a maiden and a wicket and Milo finding a great line and length in his second over . The Fareham innings ended in a flurry of energy from Jude when promised a bacon sandwich for wickets . This seemed to be all the temptation he needed taking 2 wickets and a run out in his final over finishing with overall bowling figures of 18 for 4 from 3.

The final score for the home side was 67-10 meaning the visitors only needed 17 to win. The pre innings talk was simple. “Don’t slog , play some proper cricket shots and enjoy yourselves.
George and Jude got us the 17 from their overs so we just needed to keep wickets and pick off a few runs to get home. The sugary jammy doughnuts must have kicked in in the middle overs with some dubious shot selections (and decent bowling to be fair) . A slightly nervous wobble meaning the score was 45-5 by the mid-way point. Meaning our nett score was narrowed to 25 . There was a sense that Fareham may just claw back into the game .

The mood was beginning to feel tense with a little telling off from the home scorer for the off -field support (apologies). The enthusiastic away fans suitably reprimanded , the game calmed down again with Jake and Jamie keeping their wickets intact adding a further 15 runs to the total. The final pair of Ollie and Alex making sure the game finished with some real excitement with some huge pull shots from Ollie for a great score of 21 runs . The final score 94-8 meaning a very good win of 37 runs.

It was hot, it was very hot and they were tired, hungry, thirsty and emotional. But should all be proud of how they played . Carl
