Portsmouth Cricket Club - 2024 Won by 55 runs

Match report On the astro against Havant, at the start of a very busy week - we're due to play another two before it's done - Harry lost the toss and we were inserted.

George got us off to a solid start, getting his head right over the ball and playing each ball on its merit. The outfield is very quick at the moment, and George showed that you don't need to smash the ball to get it to the boundary in conditions like this - great placement and positive shots do just as well. We had problems at the other end though, as Jude, Jasper and Harry came and went and we slid from 15-0 from 2 to 36-4 from 6. A bit of a change of tack? James N was watchful at the start with 2 from his first 8 balls, but Sam took the Bazzball route, as he blazed his way to retirement from 17 balls - noting that unfortunately the scorers had the wrong retirement score (35 not 30). Sam's innings was a great counterattack including a solid 6 over square leg and really kept the pressure on. James V scored quickly, but a mix up with JN saw him run out for 8. James and Xavier picked up the pace, with James retiring after 28 balls and Xavier run out in the final over on 21 (again, JN the protagonist here as the runner for the last man standing, we will be having a chat...). Portsmouth 143-6 and a great recovery from the 6 over mark.

In our pre-season friendly, Havant rolled an indifferent Portsmouth score with aggressive batting and running, and they approached this score in the same way. Sam Morgan went after Jude early, exploiting the short off side boundary for the left hander, but after a first over going for 13, Jude and Sam started to exert more control. Harry was captaining well, responding to the batsmen to force them to play different shots, and when Sam was well caught by James off George in the 7th over, and Harry got both Jan and Will in the next, Havant were 51-3, with key batters back in the shed. Despite spirited resistance down the order, the direction of the game went Portsmouth's way from there, with an improved fielding performance from Portsmouth (2 run outs from Jude and one from JV), and wickets for Xavier and JN. Havant bowled out for 88 in 15.2 overs.

A fantastic evening for cricket among friends home and away. Well done Portsmouth.
