A catastrophic collapse was a key factor in a last over one wicket defeat for Portsmouth 4ths at Farlington.
Off spinner Damion Stamp finished off the home innings with a hat-trick as the last six wickets fell for 15 runs in 20 balls.
Pompey had looked comfortable at 150 for 3 thanks to Matthew Scott (40 including nine 4s), Assad Sahak (45 with seven 4s) and James Moon (44 with six boundaries).
Ryan Dawtrey (3 for 44) took the pace off before Stamp (4 for 5) wrapped up the innings at a below par 186 as early as the 33rd over.
An amazing one handed grab by evergreen Marston was the outstanding feature of a quiet start to the reply, and Compton (Pat Masheter 32, Johnny Maynard 43 and Stamp 33) needed 68 from the last 10.
Some late hitting from Josh Edney (21*) took Compton to the brink before clean bowleds from Brad Giffin and Simon Jones left the scores level in the last over.
Number 11 Ryan Dawtrey edged past gully to seal the win, leaving the home side counting the cost of the little things and wondering how they had contrived to end on the losing side.
