Match report A beautiful summer’s evening saw Alex lose the toss and were put into bat on their first grass strip of the season.

The openers Harry and Thomas got off to a good start. Especially Thomas who played some lofty powerful shots including a glorious powerful drive straight over the bowlers’ head for four.
Fareham bowled straight and kept us well pegged back with runs being hard to come by and wickets falling cheaply. However there was some great batting by Alex, who looked for and found the gaps in the field really well, keeping us just about in the game. We finished off the innings with a decent knock from Seb (6 from 12) and a hard fought defence from Jake in the final overs. However overall, the score looked light with only 42 coming off the bat. The final score 70 -6.

An interesting contentious (somewhat comical) point midway through the innings saw Oliver mistakenly given out by the opposition umpire “hit wicket” scurrying back into his crease. The TV umpires (Rick and Steve) fortunately saw what had happened and pointed out the error. Oliver got a second bite at the cherry and was invited to return to the crease but not before he managed to remove all of his pads.

One thing we wanted to work on in the game was team spirit and they all took it on board and came out with real intent.

Alex first over going only for a single and Jake taking the first wicket hitting off stump in the second. Fareham looked like they would recover though and went to task in the 4th over to Jake who couldn’t quite find his length. An inspired piece of fielding from Harry though earned a clever run out with the batsman lazily wandering out of his crease.

Next bowlers up were Harry and Seb who bowled extremely well giving only 9 runs away from four overs but most importantly another 2 wickets. Fareham were 4 down and the home team had a sniff of winning the game. However, there were already 30 odd runs on the board meaning the visitors only needed 30 from 10 overs.

It would be tight but encouragingly the home team kept their heads and kept each other’s spirits up. There was a sense of belief they could do it and it was Farehams game to lose. 24 runs came off the next 3 overs, but the wickets kept coming with Oliver taking a crucial clean bowled and Jamie finishing things off with 7 overs spare. Phew!

Some real positives in this match, an all-round great team spirit probably made the difference in the end. Thomas kept and batted well, Seb had an all-round great game, Harry bowled really well, and Alex batted intelligently looking to keep the score ticking over.

One thing we could improve on is the aggression in both the batting and the running, we probably missed at least 6 runs through not taking that first run quickly /watching the ball pull up just before the boundary. Only 2 players really took on the bowlers and we probably need to work on looking for gaps, nicking singles etc . It’s not always the big shots that are needed to win the game.

However, hats off for a great team effort
