Portsmouth Cricket Club - 2024 Lost by 36 runs

Match report The end of a long week for Warrior, with matches Tuesday, Thursday and Friday - and a trip to Broxhead Common for our Cup quarter final, on a dusty outfield with an astro pitch. After a sunny St Helen's with a touch of sea breeze on Tuesday and Thursday, Broxhead was a bit of a hellscape. The outfield was a bit all over the place, and drifting smoke from a huge heath fire a few miles away gave way to raining ash as the match went on. The pitch was ringed around one side with a ditch of thorns and stinging nettles, which the ball found a few times, and the mosquitos were hungry and the size of crane flies.

Harry lost the toss and Portsmouth fielded, opening with spin again, Harry and Xavier initially restricting Grayshott. But batsmen Ollie and Henry started to pick up the pace after 3 overs. We created a few near-chances, with Sam almost inducing a catch to cover and James N finding Ollie's edge, bit at the halfway mark Grayshott were going well on 80-0. James Vick opened the account in the wickets column, bowling one, which Harry took another; but a few too many extras pushed their score along and, though we slowed them in the second half, they finished with a solid 151. Jude again bowled fairly dry, a tight line outside off stump with a touch of swing difficult for anyone to play.

With a short boundary, this was gettable for a strong Portsmouth batting line-up, but Grayshott bowled well in the early exchanges, Xavier struggling to get the ball away. Grayshott's home advantage showed as they exploited a bouncy wicket (albeit with several wides, feet over Xavier's head). After Xavier was bowled, Jude pushed the score along, hitting a six and two fours as he moved to retirement. Harry also retired, at the halfway mark, but we were well behind the rate on 53-1 and needing around 2 runs per ball from there. Both James and Sam couldn't meet the rate early and perished caught trying to force it, and James and Alex took our score forward in the last few overs with the match out of our reach.

A good match against a strong Grayshott side, and I saw a different outlook for the team today compared with last year's meeting with them. I think all the team will be looking forward to our return fixture in the league in a couple of weeks' time.
