Pompey 2s took a step closer to securing the Hampshire League Div 3 South title on Saturday, with a comprehensive 106-run victory over Follands, leaving the Unicorns top of the league with one more round of fixtures remaining.

For only the 3rd time this summer, the city club’s promotion-chasers were invited to bat first at a gloomy St Helens. The loss of the flip didn’t appear to adversely affect Pompey’s skipper, Nicky Wyatt, as he plundered the visiting bowling attack to all corners of HQ (and peppered the pitch ‘n’ putters next door) to amass a season’s best 149. Dave Henderson’s Lazarus-like 65, 24 from opening partner Jamie Mitchell, and a typically elegant 19 from Henry Farrant, all played chief support to Pompey’s unpaid Joma rep, in posting a commanding 295 for 8 from their 45 overs.

Ample runs on the board meant that Collette’s final tea copped the time-honoured touch-up, before the boys took to the field to defend their imposing total.

Opening bowlers Dan Wallis (2 for 28) and Harlan Randall (1 for 45) ripped through Follands’ top three in the first ten overs, to put the table-toppers firmly in control. A defiant 42 from the visitors’ Aaron Kuche briefly threatened to make things interesting, but an ill-advised attempted sweep off Pompey’s regal tweaker, Farhad Ahmed (2 for 28 from 10 overs), effectively ended the game as a contest. The Follands middle-order barely laid any willow on anything Ishy Ahmad (1 for 4 from 6) sent down – the unassuming seamer looked a different beast when not having Matt Shaw bellow out Ben Affleck film titles from first slip, while now-ex-Waitrose-trolley-pusher, Raz Havell (1 for 43) chipped in with an additional scalp. Smart catches from Farhad and Martin Ballard-Collins assisted Tom Wallis’ transformation into a bowling all-rounder, as he mopped up the tail, to claim 3 for 27, and finish the Hamble-based outfit off for 189.

All of which leaves the simple equation. One more win away at Cadnam next Saturday equals…
