Dear Friends and Members of Portsmouth Cricket Club

This week the senior teams experienced a mixed weekend. The 1st XI narrowly lost to Hook and Newnham Basics (by 3 runs) and the seconds also came second against Basingstoke NH (reports below).

The third team won against Porchester. Batting first Portsmouth reached 226 in their 40 overs with a century by Ryan Savage (105*) and 56 by Paul Wolf (see article on kit further down). In reply Porchester could only reach 179 (for 2) off their 40 overs

Portsmouth Cricket Club - 2018 Ladies W10 100 for 0 beat Emsworth Various 99 for 0

The mighty Portsmouth ladies team won the W10 tournament in Emsworth. It was touch and go whether we would get enough players to make up a team but having roped in Becky and Poppy at the last minute we had a team! Despite never training together we jelled very quickly and set out to have fun. There was lots of encouragement throughout and lots of moments to celebrate. Julia was our amazing wicket keeper, nothing got past her! She also did the best calling of the day when batting! Pauline bowled extremely well and scored lots of runs with the bat. Mary did some great batting, we especially enjoyed her cheeky 4s where she hit it behind her on a sloping pitch! It was Jess’s first match but it certainly didn’t show. Excellent batting and bowling, a great addition to the team. Becky bowled and batted really well and did a great catch. Poppy was an absolute star. Straight bowling, great catches and some lovely boundaries. Gemma’s bowling was very strong and she hit some great shots with the bat. Fiona captained the team, bowled well and hit some boundaries. It was a really great day and we get to do it all again in 2 weeks time in Portsmouth!

PORTSMOUTH pushed unbeaten Southern League division one leaders Hook & Newnham Basics all the way on their way to a three run defeat. The visitors needed 10 off the final over and four off the final ball but couldn’t quite get themselves over the winning line.
Visiting captain Jack Marston was disappointed to lose out after going so close. He said: ‘We feel like we should have got there
They batted first and we probably let them get 30 or 40 runs too many. ‘We believed 240 plus was a good score on their wicket. ‘It was a bit slow and the ball wasn’t coming onto the bat with any pace.’ Joe Kooner-Evans was the pick of the Portsmouth bowlers, taking four wickets for 48 runs.
Hook posted 244 for seven and the visitors suffered an early blow with the loss of Jordan Palmer-Goddard. Opener Ben Duggan (75) and Marston (25) set about repairing the damage. They put on 110 runs for the second wicket and at 120 for two Marston felt his team were in with a good chance. He added: ‘When Ben got out I thought we were in a bit of trouble.
Then Asad Abbas (30) came in and put us back in it with some quick runs.’ In a thrilling final over Lee Hungerford edged the penultimate ball to the boundary to take the game to the final ball. With the shadows making it difficult for the batsman he failed to make contact. ‘It was a shame we couldn’t get over the line but it was a much-improved performance,’ added Marston

THE WAIT CONTINUES

View From Silly Point by Jamie (Mitch) Mitchell

A new month didn’t lead to fortunes anew for Portsmouth 2s over the weekend, as they suffered another routine Hampshire League Division 2 defeat at the hands of Basingstoke & North Hants 3s.

Bright sunshine, a flat deck, and fast outfield made the decision upon winning the toss an easy one – so, predictably, the Basingstoke skipper called correctly, and duly allowed his batsmen to have first use of a pristine Rick Marston-curated pitch.

A couple of early Harlan Randall wickets, and some tight lines from the even more youthful Henry Woolf kept the visitors’ top order in check. And the economy was maintained despite possibly the youngest opening bowling combination in the league making way for probably the oldest first/second change union in Rick Marston and Andy Chapman – at the 30-over mark, a score of around 200 looked likely, as Basingstoke prioritised wickets in hand over an express scoring rate. But it was the preservation of wickets that enabled a late-overs pummelling that left the visitors posting an imposing 244 for 6 from their 45 overs.

Another outstanding tea from Collette appeared to set the tone for a similar batting effort from the home side, as openers Nicky Wyatt and Jamie Mitchell set about the chase with familiar gusto, racing to 40-odd for none in the first 6-7 overs. Sadly, it was Mitchell nicking off for 27 that set the tone, as plenty of Pompey batsmen made starts - Wyatt (29), Matt Chapman (20-odd), Woolf (20-odd) and Randall (33 not out) - without anyone making the big score required to have the home side harbour thoughts of victory, as they could only rustle up 177 for 7 in reply.

A trip to Odiham & Greywell awaits our band of merry men this Saturday, in search of that all-important first win.
