Locks Heath U9A v Portsmouth Cricket Club - 2024 U9A Warrior on Sun 02 Aug 2020 at 1600
Portsmouth Cricket Club - 2024 Won by 3 runs

Match report This was our first away friendly fixture for the U9s squad this year as Locks Heath hosted us on, as it turns out, a very typical British summer day - suncream and waterproofs at the ready! Blazing sunshine, a reasonable breeze, drizzle and sometimes heavy showers all thrown in the mix. The A's were up against old friends having hosted Locks Heath a few weeks prior and our Captain Lily carefully chose to put her team into the field, in her own words, "to restrict their batting and give us a target to aim for". What very wise thoughts!

Some lovely sunshine in the first half of our fielding innings saw some fabulous bowling again from James N taking two wickets and James V taking a further two in his, leaving the hosts on 21-4 after four overs. Then, sadly, summer seemed to pause and the drizzle started making things particularly tricky in the field, but it was a real team effort today with some smart backing up. By the end of our innings it had stopped raining and we had kept a lid on their runs with a rather slippery ball, with Locks Heaths total of 123-7.

Up first to put on the scores for Portsmouth were the two James', facing some rapid bowling and ably making progress at commendable 34 for the pair, including 5 boundaries between them and a 6 for James N. Lily and William worked well together today and pushed out the singles nicely as well as a boundary for Lily. Up next were Jude and Emily who were fabulous at calling the singles allowing the strike to rotate nicely and nudging up the score. With the loss of 6 wickets to that point our adjusted target was 154 with 4 overs left our score of 114-6, which made victory feel a little bit of a tall order. Vi and Sam came into bat out the match with defence of the wicket and run attack both being equally important. They certainly put spectators and scorers(!) on the edge of their seats closing the match in dramatic fashion with great singles, doubles and a triple, a dropped catch (eek!), 3 boundaries and a six in the last four overs taking the pair to 35.

In truth the final scores were so close there was little to split the teams and much checking of soggy score sheets declared that Portsmouth had just nipped over the target total, by 3 runs! Of special note was our MVP, Vi, with a near boundary throw in sending the bails flying and best pair to Emily and Jude for some lovely calling in their batting and bowling.

Cricket was most definitely the winner today and some really super efforts from all who turned out across the squads.
