Match report Summer Loving - Saving The Best ‘till Last
This long awaited and widely publicised El Clasico took place at St Helens Fields, Portsmouth on
Sunday 26th September 2021 in conditions which could only be described as an Indian Summer
“Plus” – It was roasting...
Leggy Lane and Scorer Glen’s video updates had kept the Ramblers titivated for a good few months
before hand, everyone wondering what standard each would field when they ventured south of
Guildford into sunny ‘Ampshire....
The threat of being stranded at the Kiss Me Quick seaside resort, unable to return home due to the
then fuel shortages and the resulting stabbing in the eye by his better half Doris because the
children would be late to bed that evening and absent from school on Monday because of “your
bloody cricket match” loomed. Nothing, however, would keep Lane and his band of Crack Cricketers
away from fulfilling this fixture and the chance of having a pop at Rich Sadler’s Happy Sunday XI.
It was great to see so many Yummy Mummies, WAGS and associated offspring roving the ground,
enjoying the late summer sun. The mountain bike trickster’s cameo across the freshly prepared
wicket was definitely one to remember.
It could be said that the match itself was played in a Gentlemanly spirit, with plenty of gay banter,
the odd comment about Lane’s footwear and umpire Woolf’s chivvying on turnaround which
threatened a few choice words culminating in a Big Bundle.... Luckily, using his cunning and guile,
Lane tempered the moment and the game continued to flow relatively peacefully.
The Ramblers, first to bat, posted a more than respectable score just shy of 200 off their 35 overs for
the loss of most of their valiant team. The late arrival of Bobby Boon, hot from Fratton Railway
Station on his trusty green tricycle did not seem to affect the team, ambivalent to his absence and
Lane holding himself back and keeping himself fresh and available for the bowling attack later in the
day.
Now it’s true to say that the Portsmouth Happy Sunday XI have rarely, in their 2 year history, scored
more than 160 off 35, even on a flat track with ringers bribed to play from the 1st Team, a J2O and a
Curley Wurly their reward. Some would call their performances a shit show, others, if pressed may
offer a kinder perspective. So it was with some trepidation that they undertook to better The
Ramblers score. The feat undertaken with no player participating that day in a Portsmouth team
higher than The Mighty 4th XI, playing Hampshire League Div 5...Their budget blown, Curly Wurlies
and J20’s spent the previous week...
A chilled out vibe complimented blue skies, a gentle breeze and the sweaty efforts in the middle.
Sweet Caroline mixed with rhythms from Justin Bieber and the odd one from Calvin Harris, Glen
providing the odd comment on performances via the PA, good, bad, but mostly indifferent (there
were some good catches actually and some really great batting by both sides). The Yummy
Mummies taking it easy on the beach with the kids, licking ice cream and topping up their fading
fake tan.
Towards the end of the encounter, when tired limbs were prevalent and minds wandering to a
Fosters and a Juicy Burger, it was noted that the scorer was having trouble with one bowler’s name,
Crane, Graine, Lame, Germaine? Sorry, could you repeat the bowlers name please, I can’t hear a
******* word you’re saying? Maybe someone could let me know...?
In the event and without disseminating performances and destroying reputations, the Happy
Sundays nicked it with 2 overs to spare. Wild celebrations were spared of course, such is The PCC
Happy Sunday’s way.
Beer and BBQ food followed closing speeches from Lane and Sadler, thanking everyone from the
cleaner to the parking attendant, blah, blah, blah. The Ramblers departed with close to empty fuel
tanks but, we hope, lungs full of salty sea air, scorched, peeling skin, red with sunburn having had a
great day out, content in the knowledge that we’ll av em next year, you’ll see.
It would of course be rude to mention names and accredit them to amazing performances which
would only inflate already overblown egos and cause undue upset to others far more deserving,
thereby making life harder for the captain to select the team next year, so we won’t – you know
what you did and how well you played. Thank you Southwell Ramblers for a very enjoyable last game
of the 2021 season.
We very much look forward to welcoming you all back to St Helens, Portsmouth on Sunday 4th
September 2022.
