Dear Friends and Members of Portsmouth Cricket Club

St Helen's is in full swing!

All three adult teams are fighting hard in their respective leagues.

Our 3rd team this year has seen more colts coming through to play which is a fantastic testament to the coaches and managers of the various age groups.

The Colts training this year under the stewardship of Shane has been well received by all colts and from the feedback we receive by the parents as well who now see the strong commitment of the club to help the development of all colts at whatever level they are.

The hope of the Committee is that each age group in the colts section provides at least three first-team players in the fullness of time and we are confident that with the colts increasing their level of energy towards the weekly sessions that this goal can be achieved.

As we become more successful on the pitch and as we develop a clear training and coaching strategy we expect our membership to grow. With this growth comes the challenge of providing everyone with competitive cricket.

We fully recognise this challenge and will encourage all colts managers to ensure that whilst the A teams will be the top teams the Bs and Cs etc. will be regarded as a platform to give all colts some cricket on a rotation basis.

As to the adults with only three teams, we can only give 33 players each week cricket so as numbers grow we will closely monitor the situation and consider a 4th team and also some Sunday or Midweek cricket.

We are pleased to announce that the Indoor Leagues are being booked again for winter with three adult teams and two colt’s teams. Again, within the playing regulations, we will endeavour to provide cricket to all those who want to play.

As ever, if any member has any issues regarding cricket matters please contact any member of the cricket committee.

Portsmouth Beat Weather to Reach 2nd in League

The bowlers set the tone with some impressive performances as Portsmouth dodged the rain to secure a comprehensive eight-wicket win at OTs & Romsey in the Southern Premier League division one.

Skipper Jack Marston was pleased with the way his team set about the task after winning the toss and playing some good cricket.

They knew they had to work fast with bad weather threatening.

He said: ‘I won the toss and decided to bowl first because there was a lot of rain around.

‘Fraser Hay (three for 40) bowled well up top for us and we soon had OTs in trouble at 50 for five.

‘Because he was struggling with his hip Fraser didn’t try to bowl as fast as he usually does. He concentrated on hitting the top of off stump and put the ball into good areas. When we brought our spinners on they strangled the life out of the OTs innings.’

Andrew Marston and Fahad Ahmed went for just 40 runs off their 20 overs.

The former, bowling his left-arm off-spinners, conceded a miserly 12 runs in his 10-over spell.

The hosts were restricted to 172 for nine off their 50 overs but the weather started to close in.

Knowing the game could be reduced because of rain Portsmouth knew they needed to score quickly at the start of their innings.

Opener William Smitherman made sure that happened with 40 off just 45 balls including six fours and one six.

The rain finally arrived and forced the teams off with Portsmouth on 70 for two.

With time lost the game changed into a 28 over game and thanks to Smitherman Portsmouth only needed to score 20 off 10 overs when they resumed.

Skipper Marston and Hay easily scored the runs required to keep Portsmouth on the charge.

Fraser Hay will lead Portsmouth in their division one game against Calmore Sports at St Helens.

Vikram Dawson returns and Sam Collings-Wells is back from university.

Collings-Wells recently played in the Varsity match for Cambridge against Oxford University at Lords.

Regular captain Jack Marston is away and he also fears the Isle of Wight Festival could impact on the team.

He said: ‘Our biggest worry is the fact Fraser and Ben Duggan are going to the Isle of Wight Festival on Friday.

‘They intend travelling back for the game and I just hope they make it.’

View From Silly Point by Jamie (Mitch) Mitchell

After Friday's filthy weather, the 2s Hampshire League Div 2 fixture at home to Winton was abandoned while several of Pompey's players were still in bed.

Therefore, in lieu of a match report this week, The View has slapped up a couple of player profiles, to pad out the newsletter.

It may become a regular feature, if any of the lads have the nerve to answer these questions (or in Nicky's case, have some of the questions answered for him).

So without further ado..

(ewww - Ed)

Name: Nicky Wyatt
Role: Captain, Opening batsman
Tipple of choice: Punk Dog IPA

Claim to cricketing fame: Skippered the likes of James (Jimmy) Adams through the age groups with Hampshire.

You're hosting a dinner party, with space for three VIP guests - which famous folk (alive or dead) do you invite: Diego Maradona, George Best, Beefy (Botham, not Adam Rogoff).

Redeeming feature: My get-up, 'cos I'm a labels man inn' I.

Irrational hatred: Grown men in football kits.

Guilty pleasure: Pedicures.

The thought of what keeps you awake at night: Being outscored by Jordan Palmer-Goddard over the course of a season.

You're at a wedding, and some wag has dragged you onto the dance floor - what's your go-to move: Slide on me knees with the kiddywinks, to reenact Tim Bayley's fielding.

If you could add an asset from a teammate, what would it be: Mitch's vocabulary.

Most likely to be heard saying: "On the Noah's."

In your opinion, who is PCC's alpha: Collette Palmer-Goddard.

Name: Jamie Mitchell
Role: Opening batsman
Tipple of choice: Hop House

Claim to cricketing fame: Played with and against Nathan Bracken when I was a pup.

You're hosting a dinner party, with space for three VIP guests - which famous folk (alive or dead) do you invite: Richie Benaud, Brendon Burns, Rachel Riley.

Redeeming feature: Dad-to-be bod.

Irrational hatred: Non striking batsmen standing so wide of the cut strip, they block my view of the striking batsman when fielding at mid/long on.

Guilty pleasure: Strictly.

The thought of what keeps you awake at night: Colliding with Matt Chapman whilst running between the wickets. If bumping into Bobby Jones left me mildly concussed, then a Chappers collision could make Rosie a widow.

You're at a wedding, and some wag has dragged you onto the dance floor - what's your go-to move: Tim Lovejoy's UK hip hop dance.

If you could add an asset from a teammate, what would it be: Nicky Wyatt's pull shot.

Most likely to be heard saying: "Me mincers are shot."

In your opinion, who is PCC's alpha: Collette Palmer-Goddard.
