Locks Heath CC Under 11 Lightning v Portsmouth Cricket Club - 2024 U11A Warrior on Thu 26 May 2022 at 6PM
Portsmouth Cricket Club - 2024 Won by 5 runs

Match report A really good win for several reasons against a side that haven't lost since 2020. Portsmouth batted first and started really positively against sharp bowling, James N hitting one of their quicks back over his head before being run out for 13. Freddie kept the tempo up while George anchored the innings, Freddie out for 15 after hitting a 6 over midwicket. George and Jude then played really intelligently, with some classy shots ensuring both retired while we used all of our overs - Tom Coltman arriving just in time to pad up to score crucial runs with Sam Martin at the end. Portsmouth's total of 132 was a good one - about 8 an over.

Despite Jude starting us off well with the ball, bowling one of their openers for a duck, the other batted really well, taking a liking to James V in particular and retiring in no time to put them on 63 after 6 overs, well ahead of the rate. And they had depth in their batting too, their number 5 a big hitter who pushed them to 108-3 after 12 overs. They needed just 25 runs off the last 6 at around 4 an over. But Portsmouth weren't finished yet - and with James N running out 2 of their batsmen from mid-off, and bowling a wicket maiden, it was Jude who finished things off, first by bowling one of their last pair, and then inducing the edge for 4 that meant their last batsman had to retire and they lost the game (very odd rules in U11A!).

What was great about this one was the strong team spirit and self-belief that Portsmouth showed, never giving up in a tight spot (either that, or their maths is pretty average and they didn't know how far behind it they were...I'll give them the benefit of the doubt). Cricket's so often a game that always gives you a chance if you can take it, and hopefully the boys enjoyed the match and will take a lot of confidence from it. It was really good to see, especially after our earlier performance against Hambledon where weren't nearly as resilient. And of course, the vital intervention of Tom Coltman who arrived late from his school trip in time to bat and to save crucial runs in the field!
