Match report Fantastic conditions for industrial kite flying, saw the U9A team battling the typical English 'summer' weather and near gale force winds to secure their second victory of the season and increase their unbeaten run. After managing to source a match ball that was appropriate for playing a match with (quite some feat by the way), Xavier won the toss and chose to field. Inexplicably, this resulted in half the team taking off their jumpers when they should have been rummaging for jackets in their cricket bags. The extremely windy conditions made bowling very tricky, resulting in more wides being bowled than was planned. This said, it was great to see concentration in the field and no over throws that i can remember - well done! Regular wickets fell including a couple of run outs. Other chances were hard to come by in the field but Sarisbury were restricted to 100-7 at the close of the innings despite a splattering of 4s in their middle order.
After a quick turnaround including jumpers being put on, haribo sweets being stuffed into young mouths and a challenge of losing fewer than 5 wickets, the Pompey innings commenced.
Xavier and Hadley provided a solid start, managing to run a few singles and a boundary interspersed by a number of wides to reach 28-0 after their 4 overs. Charlie and FInley strode out confidently and carried on the run chase. Unfortunately this pair didn't receive bowling that was conducive to hitting the ball but the wides certainly helped the score which progressed to 50-0 after 8 overs.
Next in, Archie and Jacob did a great job and faced Sarisbury's strongest bowler for one over which resulted in 2 wickets going down in consecutive balls. Some great running in the next over pushed our total onto 79 - 2 as the final pair of Jasper and James skipped out.
The result was sealed in the first over of their 4 with Jasper taking advantage of some accommodating bowling and smashing 3 fours and well-run 2. He added another 4 the next over and then the penultimate over saw James hit the nicest shot of the day with a smearing on drive for four off their best bowler. A rousing finish to a fantastic performance. Well done and thank you to all the parents who braved the conditions. Thanks also to the BBQ team who provided each player with a much appreciated hot hot dog afterwards!
