Match report Our penultimate league match this season, and a bit of a tight one. Jude won the toss and chose to field.

Jude opened the bowling, getting early results as he bowled both their openers, one blocking the ball into the ground to see it spin back onto his wicket, but James N went for a few runs before Xavier picked up a couple of crucial wickets, Seb fortuitously caught by Ollie off a rank full toss and Dexter bowled. Tom, James V and Ollie kept the rate down with some tight bowling, Ollie also picking up another 2 wickets, before Jasper took another to leave Sarisbury 72-7. It was a strong rearguard by their no.8 batter though, adding 25 from Seb and James N's bowling before James bowled him to wrap up the innings. Excellent keeping from Jasper in this innings, with no byes coming from the first 9 overs.

The talk before we went out to chase 98 centred around their bowling attack having some likely weaker links, and the need chasing a low score to make sure we got a chance to get into them and use our overs. Unfortunately, we found a few ways to get out and gradually lost wickets as we went. James V, after a strong start, was bowled cutting off the stumps; and James N got a decent nut that caressed the off stump. Xavier did well to tick the strike over, but as Ollie and Jasper were bowled and Xavier caught we were soon 61-5 off 8 and in some trouble, Jude and Tom at the crease. Jude batted really sensibly, seeing off Seb's last over while accumulating runs, and when they got the opportunity against a slower bowler, Tom smashed a big 6 off the first ball - cueing a dance of some sort (modern jive?), which I'm not sure had stopped when he was bowled by the fourth ball - bringing Seb to the crease to hit his first ball to the boundary - Portsmouth 81-6. With Seb and Jude taking us to 92-6 after 13, Sarisbury took their last throw of the dice, bringing Dexter on for his final over. With four from Jude to the first ball, Portsmouth were one short of the total when Jude was bowled next ball. One to Seb, the last man standing, brought the scores level, followed by a couple of dots (one a gnat's whisker from the stumps), before Seb sliced one to the boundary for the winning runs.

Lots of lessons for all in this one, and a great experience for the kids - a great performance from Seb with the bat which should bring a lot of confidence, and some really good fielding throughout limiting their score. As exciting as it was, I'd be happy with percentage cricket in our batting innings, showing respect to good balls and attacking the bad balls - which might have saved us all a few palpitations.
