Portsmouth Cricket Club - 2024 Lost By 28 Runs

Match report Portsmouth lost the toss and were elected to field. A slightly bizarre start to the match saw the Hambledon opener having to repad after being out first ball, only to repeat it when we moved to the correct length track. A great ball from Jude doing the damage. The visitors then batted really sensibly picking off odd the loose balls from Seb and Jude both who bowled really well playing safely to get the singles .
The batsmen really took a shine to Jakes slow balls who sadly couldn’t find his length smashing 13 from his first over and the score board soon began to accelerate. Xavier bowled an excellent line and length and with a turning track took 3 wickets in 2 overs. The innings finished fairly tight though with some really tight fast bowling from Thomas and Jamie and Xavier picking up the final wicket. The visitors 115-7.
The hosts came out positively but unfortunately wickets fell at regular intervals pretty early on and we were 4 down by the 4th over. Jude and Thomas kept the match alive with Jude getting an excellent 33 NO and Thomas playing a sensible innings for 14. Sadly the target was a stretch too far and the hosts finished 28 short with 4 overs to play.
A very good-natured game and encouraging to see good teamwork on the pitch and increased vocal support for each other, especially when things occasionally looked a bit shaky.
It was really positive to see the low number of extras with only 4 wides and one no ball the whole game. For the most part the fielding was good with only the odd mistake. One area to perhaps work on is how to pace the innings and keep our wickets intact when chasing down totals especially when early wickets fall.
