Match report So, our last league match, in which we just managed to squeeze a dry patch out of an increasingly wet summer. Harry lost the toss and we were inserted.

A slow start became a problematic one when Harry and James N were both bowled without troubling the scorers, but George and Sam kept the scoring going. But with George caught for 5, and James V bowled first ball, we were 36-4 after 6 overs and in dire straits. Sam and Xavier both played really well to retire, but despite the efforts of debutant Thomas and Ollie, we once again failed to bat out our overs, all out for 102 in 15.3 overs.

In their reply, Sarisbury started very strongly, while George, James, Xavier and Harry couldn't quite nail their lines and lengths - and our fielding was below our best too. Seb retired with the score around 71 after 10 overs, and Sarisbury were cruising. A wicket for Thomas pegged them back, and when George emulated his Aussie heroes in stumping their batsman from 5 yards back as he left his ground after playing a shot, Sarisbury needed just 18 to win from 5 overs; and with James bowling a double-wicket maiden, suddenly a miraculous win seemed on the cards.

Though we've often played our best cricket this season with our backs to the wall, it wasn't to be tonight, and we just couldn't break through Sarisbury's resistance - a flurry of boundaries sealed it for them, as they won with 11 balls to spare.

Too often this season we've had matches in which we've drifted in the middle overs - but while we didn't quite get our skills right tonight, I was really pleased to see the kids' temperament in keeping on plugging away, supporting each other and keeping their heads up for the next ball each time it didn't go their way. We finish the league in 2nd, and I hope the kids have really enjoyed it - I think they have all done themselves proud over the course of the summer.
