Portsmouth Cricket Club - 2025 Won by 4 wickets

Match report Well, what an epic match! In the words of Julie Andrews…let’s start at the very beginning…

A sunny day, but not too sweaty, so much better for playing cricket (saying that I wasn’t on the pitch but sat nicely in the shade!)

It started well for Emily’s Emeralds with Emily losing the toss, looking good already. The scorer for Cove asked if the bowler who had annihilated them last time (the OG hustler, Shayna) was playing to which I advised she was not. Their team were then very buoyant…but little did they know, we had a secret replacement…to be revealed as you read on…

Cove chose to bat first and Emily asked Evie and Lauren to open bowling. It appears that 3 days of partying post A levels for Evie can temper her skills…she didn’t do toooo badly, but then was asking not to bowl herself! In her defence the first wicket fell in the 3rd over, bowled by Evie and caught by Freya which can only be described as a catch by Mr Tickle’s every extending arms with Velcro on the hand! How she caught it defied physics but we were delighted! (obviously the scorer remained completely unbiased and cheered from the scoring table!)

Lauren and Evie continued to battle to try and get a further wicket, also Freya and Amelia, both getting maiden overs (go girls!) and then in walks our captain, also now known as Stealth Weapon. She walks on, looking all demure with her blond plaits, and knocks out a maiden, then a wicket maiden taking 2 wickets in one over! OMG, to quote Alicia Keys ‘this girl is on fire!’ In reverence to OG Hustler, Emily then gets her third sequential maiden over. During this Amelia also gets a wicket as does Freya, both also getting maiden overs. Neev and Isla come in and bowl doing a sterling job but Emily is still going. In her 7th over, she manages her fifth wicket to make it onto the hallowed board, but then goes and gets a sixth! Phenomenal!! Well done Emily, fantastic play!

Credit also needs to go to Izzy, Isla and Simran legging it round the boundary as the ground was so hard and the ball was flying to the boundary. Emma’s name from now in is Mr Miyagi (for those of us that remember the scene where he catches a fly with chop sticks – for those that have no idea -go watch the film Karate Kid!) due to her fast reflexes as wickie as ever! Well played all, all out on the 34th over for 142, so we had quite a target to hit.

A brief stop for food then in to bat. Lauren and Jo C opened. A great partnership but Lauren was bowled too soon, unlucky. Freya walked in and she and Jo were fantastic. Jo was knocking the ball left, right and centre and we wondered if this was going to be another century, they both got five 4s each and partnered for 8 overs. Freya was then unfortunately caught ( at least not LBW!) but not before getting 25 runs for the team. Emma was in next in and she and Jo battled on for 5 overs, Emma hitting two 4s for the team along with facing many balls before being caught out. Next in was Evie to join Jo at the crease. It appears 3 days of partying isn’t good for bowling but is pretty good for batting. She and Jo partnered for another 7 overs, with Evie hitting Jo at one point, before Evie’s 9 lives of batting ran out (a few balls high in the air weren’t caught…) and she was caught out, fair cop, but not before hitting three 4s and getting 21 runs!

Next in was Neev, and the opposition brought back their big guns to try to get Jo C out. After facing about 65ish balls and being in for 26 overs the opposition finally bowled Jo for LBW. Well played Jo, 33 runs for the team and top scorer for the match.
Simran in and a short partnership as she was robbed with a catch, really unlucky. At this point we were on 116 on the 26th over… Cove had been on 115 at the exact same point….Amelia walks into the crease. Cove are feeling pretty confident as they had taken out what they thought would be the big guns….how mistaken could they be. The blond and brunette stood at either end of the wicket and blasted the ball all over the place. We needed 4 runs per over average, 5 runs, then 3…will we make it? We should have had no doubt as in the 30th over Neev hit a 4, then a 2 and then another 4. Not to be outdone, Amelia then whacked another 4 and a 2 and victory was ours! Wooohooo!

Fantastic game ladies, well played all and special mention to Izzy, who didn’t bowl or bat but never ceases to be the one legging it everywhere. Emily’s Emeralds do it again!! 😊

Thanks Paul, as ever, for umpiring and putting up with random requests from team members! 👍🏻
