Match report Wikipedia describes traditional Nomads as ‘people who follow their herd according to the seasons. However, unlike traditional nomads, global nomads travel alone or in pairs rather than with a family and/or livestock. They also travel worldwide and via various routes, whereas traditional nomads have a fixed annual or seasonal pattern of movement’.

It is this seasonal pattern of movement that Cricketers and their supporters are, in a small way, ‘traditional nomads’……. although I am unsure where the livestock would fit in!!

Anyway, Wed 10 Jul 19 was no exception as the travellers of PCC U11 B gathered at LH for our next fixture. It was home from home for myself tonight as this was my fourth visit to LH’s ground this season, the last 3 being unsuccessful……surely fortune would be on our side this time?

The supporters gathered in the warm evening sunshine. Home supporters in the East side of the Hedge End stand (not to be confused with a part of Southampton) and PCC in the West side.

Veer was our Captain tonight and the toss was duly undertaken. Tails was the call from Veer……. heads the coin landed, hmmmm Déjà vu. LH had the call and opted to field first.

Our innings started with Joseph (7) and Maya (17) providing a solid start for the team. Joseph rotating the strike well and Maya hitting superb shots to the boundary. By the end of the fourth over we were 38 for the loss of no wickets. Will (6) and Thomas (2) were next up and kept the score going admirably and by the 8th over we had reached 54 for 0.
Kiera (5) and Veer (18) were next and I think the latter had been closely following the Cricket World Cup on television. Bearing a close resemblance in batting style to Jason Roy or Virat Kohli (see ball, hit ball), Veer tore into the LH bowling. Together they supported each other well and progressed our score to 80. In fact, our remaining batsmen all did exceptionally well in rotating the score board. Judith (9), Sam (14), Heath (14) and Alex (14) ensured that we finished our innings on 150 for the loss of only 3 wickets.

West side Hedge End Stand were ecstatic………. faint mumblings from the East side!!!

A quick change around, orchestrated by the LH Umpire mumbling something about light and not getting the 20 overs in, PCC duly took to the field and opened with Heath and Alex delivering some impressive tight bowling, ably supported by Maya and Joseph.
A superb Run Out by Kiera ensured that we had taken 1 wicket, moving our score on to 155 by the end of the fourth over and LH were on 31 for 1. Further tight bowling from Will, Kiera and Sam brought us to an interesting time. More checking of the light meter from the LH umpire, smirks from the West stand.

Cricket matches can often be decided by defining moments and we had ours in the eighth over. You will often hear commentators saying that batsmen struggle with flighted deliveries that go above their eye line. Well I have to say it works! Cometh the hour cometh the person. Judith J.
With her flighted deliveries she took a hat-trick, two catches from Alex B-H and one from our keeper Veer. Our score zoomed on to 170 whilst LH were reeling on 61 for 4.
More checking of the light meter from the LH umpire, louder smirks from the West stand.

Clearly keen to follow his direction, the PCC bowlers cracked on and continued with good bowling returns. A wicket for Joseph, once again caught by Alex B-H, and another wicket for Judith J (4 in total), this time caught by Maya. By the end of the last over LH were 149 for 6 and our score had moved to 180. The Managers luck had finally changed.

Many thanks to all supporters for filling the West side of the Hedge End stand, George M and James B for umpiring (together) and George for warming the team up.

More importantly, Curly Wurlies (please see Glyn and not Simon) go to:

PoTM – Judith J for her 4 wickets including a Hat-trick.
PoTM – Veer for excellent keeping and top scoring with 18 Runs.
PoTM – Alex B-H for 3 well taken catches
