Match report Here we are again, another cricket season commences with a new captain at the helm, our wonderful Emily Mackenzie. Today was our first match and was at home. The sun was shining (intermittently) and we all gently froze to death due to the lovely wind blowing in from the Arctic! Not to be perturbed the ladies all took it in their stride.

In true Portsmouth style, the toss was lost and we consequently went into bat first. There was an element of reluctance from the team for who was to lead us out but our valiant Emma agreed and stepped up to the crease with Shayna. A good partnership was had for several overs, with Emma getting three 4s and Shayna two before being bowled out in the 5th over. In steps Freya, having already played a game in the morning and scoring over 50 then. She was either going to be warmed up or worn out! Well, she was most definitely not worn out, she was a total and utter star getting 12 4’s (potentially, we know how accurate my scoring is) and scoring 59 runs before being bowled out with LBW (which none of us agreed with but that’s cricket!). Unfortunately due to the scorers inadequacies she is not able to say how long Freya was at the crease but it was FOREVER!!! Well done Freya. During that time she was partnered for a significant time period with Evie and ran lots of 1s to get Freya back into the crease. Success! All played and lasted at least an over or 2 and the final score was 149 all out in 25 overs, a good score for them to have to chase. Off to match tea, thanks to Jo Fairwood and Chat GPT I believe (thanks Jo 😊).

Then back in to bowl. The deadly duo of Evie and Shayna commenced, fast and spin, like good cop bad cop except neither of them are good cop really to the opposition. Evie got the first wicket on the 3rd over. Not to be beaten, Shayna got the 2nd wicket in the following over and at that point her score was 1 run for 1 wicket – not bad 😊. Tight fielding meant the opposition did not get many 4s at all (not in comparison to Freya!) despite a fast field (it may have felt like the arctic but the ground was very dry) with great throwing by all with lots of sprinting to prevent those 4s. Emma was very committed to being wickie, saving the ball with hands and ankle bone at one point (ouch!).

Evie and Shayna continued their pairing taking wickets every other over, both getting wicket maidens, and then Shayna got bored and decided to take 2 in the 10th over, taking her total to 4 (at that point!). To switch it up, Emily M came in to bowl taking a further wicket but Shayna was on a roll, taking another 2, giving her a total of 6 wickets, awesome! Freya and Emily then set up a short but sweet partnership, short because primarily there weren’t many more players to bowl out and Emily got the last wicket in the 16th over, they had scored 48 to our 149 – victory was ours, hurrah!!

Great game ladies, well played and a fabulous start to the season. Thank you Paul for umpiring and hopefully not getting hypothermia too badly, Simon for stepping up to the mark and volunteering to learn how to score and Jo M for helping set up and sort out match tea.
