Friendly St Cross Symonds Ladies 2nd v Portsmouth Ladies (A)

St Cross won the toss and chose to bat on a very hot day with a very fast sloping boundary down one side.

St Cross from Div 2 were a very friendly bunch and we were keen to get stuck into them.
Everyone got a bowl and 35 overs later St Cross had amassed a sizeable 250 -7. They had 3 or 4 players making notable 25-50 scores but by far the highest score was our 75 extras. We bowled well with relatively few byes or leg byes but bowling between the blue crease lines under Div 2 guidelines was difficult and 53 wides was the result.
We also got punished for too much short bowling that got pulled easily for many fours.
Maya led the wickets with a 4for with help from Florie’s smart WK catch, some other Ladies appeals for LBW and generally bowling straight and flat out at the wickets. Our bowlers stuck to their task with a run out and a wicket each for Darcey and Abi. Point to note, umpires confirmed two LBW Outs were not appealed for - note to all Ladies, appeal almost anything that hits the pads …. Within reason.

Some loose fielding (Long barrier, diving and stopping balls at all cost practice required) added a further 25 to a total which could easily have been contained to 150…….a long fielding day but we stuck to the task with enthusiasm on a tough session. We learned a lot too.

Going into bat, the message was take your time, 35 overs is a long time. Block the straight ball, protect your wicket, hit the loose balls. We lost Darcey early edged and Ct behind smartly which left others to hang in there and grind out a decent reply. St Cross bowled tightly so it was difficult to score but the ladies tried their best to stay around as Maya was beginning to show the form with the bat we know she’s capable of.
In reality too many Ladies got clean bowled which suggests shot choice needs some improvement as they all know how to block the straight ball. Nonetheless Maya continued to bat well making a well deserved 55 before getting bowled herself. The tail didn’t wag much after that and we fell short of the St Cross score posting a credible 154 all out. Off 32.1 overs.

So in summary work to continue but lots of positives, especially playing such a long match in that heat. St Cross were very complimentary of our Ladies and our alround skill and enthusiasm.

Ladies if note - Judith her Ladies Debut and excellent yet simple and effective fielding, Freya’s fantastic boundary saving dives putting her body on the line and “Leading Lady” must go to Maya a 4for and a batting 55, well done Maya.

Back now to important league matches with Ryde (A) Sunday. Important we win and the team will be picked soon to confirm numbers for the Hover bookings for Sunday. Ryde have agreed to minibus us from the Hover terminal.
