Portsmouth Cricket Club - 2024 Lost by 7 wickets

Match report Another relatively typical intermittently sunny day for a game of cricket. In Dani’s absence Lauren was given the responsibility of Captain (of which she did a valiant job, well done Lauren!) and got the team warming up well. She took the toss….and lost, so it’s not just Dani, and we were put in to bat. Kristy and Lauren opened, facing a good few balls but then were both bowled out. Jo C stepped onto the crease at 1.31pm (there is a reason for me stating this….) and started to bat. Steady was the game, running for the 1s, the 2s, and lots of 4s. Florie came in, and out, then Alexis and Evie but sadly didn’t last long. Izzy stepped in and a phenomenal partnership of 97 with Jo occurred before Izzy was bowled out as well. Lara, then Leya in, with Jo still at the crease. Jo was gently over heating her head in her helmet but battled on for the team. Then, at last, in around the 32nd (ish) over she did it and reached a century. The crowd roared and screamed as it was the first century score for the Portsmouth Ladies team! Well done Jo, or rather Queen Jo as she shall now be known as, absolutely brilliant! So proud😊 . She and Leya were in till the end of the 35 overs, Jo eventually stepping off the crease at 3.23pm, nearly 2 hours of play with a score of 102, having hit 16 4s! Top run score ever for the team (We need the Ladies board up on the wall of the cricket pavilion this year please 😊) and I think probably the highest scoring partnership of 97 but not sure I am accurate on that bit. Total of 212 for the 35 overs, our highest score to date in a match (I think..).

A short break for tea then back in to bowl. Evie opening and bowled out their 2nd player her 2nd over, well done Evie. We hoped this was the way it was going to go but little did we know how powerful their 2 batters would be. When they made contact they made it fly but our fielders were superb. Diving from Lauren, close to broken fingers for Alexis just missing a catch, a spectacular sprint by Evie to hook the ball off the boundary to stop a 4 but also by all the team to prevent balls becoming 4s. There may have been quite a few of them but it must be noted that 54 contacts with the ball only went for a 1 or 2 and it is fair to say that had we not fielded as well as we did a lot of those would be 4s. The opposition scorer and captain both commended the team on how good they were at fielding.

It was a very technically challenging game trying to work out who should bowl when and sadly despite our great score, the opposition with their big whacking made it to our total and beat us in the 31st over. Disappointment was palpable and even the opposition scorer said we should have won, but that is life.

For me, this was her Majesty, Queen Jo’s game, even if we didn’t win. The team gelled so well, phenomenal fielding and we would have been beaten far more quickly had everyone not been so, literally, on the ball. Well done your Majesty, despite the result, you, and the rest of the team, were fabulous! 👑
