Portsmouth Cricket Club - 2024 Lost by 52 runs

Match report It’s the cricket season so as tradition goes, it was a glorious sunny day, oh no that was Saturday, it was a wet and drizzly day but this would not perturb the ladies 1st XI (aka Dani's Diamonds) as it was the first match of the season and they would not be put off by mere rain!

The game commenced with Dani winning the toss….maybe not 😊, she lost and St Cross decided to bat first. The weather came in and rained enough to move the scorers into a shelter and luckily the St Cross scorer had binoculars so we could still see the wicket!

Evie opened the bowling along with Shayna against the St Cross 2 big batters. Thanks to the ground being so wet any big hit thankfully didn’t make it the boundary but it kept Izzy and Jo F and Jo C very busy, Izzy choosing on a number of occasions to use her knee to stop balls – ouch! Taking one for the team, or more like two or three Izzy, thanks!
Emily decided trying to hit the player rather than the stumps would be a good option and bowled two players out with LBW, we were rather pleased it had to be said. She also did an awesome run out with a throw from near the boundary, well done Emily, nice work. Two wickets taken by Maya, one bowled out, one caught by Dani and then Rosie decided taking just one wicket in an over wasn’t enough so took two. Thank goodness we had those binoculars to see who was coming out as the changeover was so quick!
The last over to go and Evie bowled again. Not to be beaten by Rosie she also took two wickets, end of innings (as St Cross had to retire a player for injury – not by Emily..) with 117 to chase.

As if by magic, Jo Mackenzie turned up with a feast of a match tea all set up on a pasting table (where there’s a will there’s a way!) and all enjoyed filling their bellies while it transiently didn’t rain.

It was then our turn to bat, Izzy and Harriet (welcome Harriet, nice to have you on the team 😊) opened but they were against very strong bowlers. Izzy sadly got bowled out quite quickly, Harriet was in for longer but the soggy wicket, slippery balls and not to mention the fact it was raining did make batting a little challenging. Dani and Shayna had a good pairing for a while until Shayna was run out and then Dani was caught out with what was actually an amazing catch (probably shouldn’t big up the opposition, but it was good). Jo F came into the wicket and did a couple of amazing shots which on a drier day would have gone for a 4 but they got 2s instead. Our other newbie Lara (welcome, lovely to have you on the team as well 😊) lasted a good while but St Cross had a strong bowler who took out the last 3 standing, leaving us all out for 65. So, not a victory but as usual fantastic comradery and team playing which is always such a pleasure to see and what it is all about. A big thank you to Martin who kindly umpired, no doubt freezing to death out there, when Florie couldn’t even play.

Fingers crossed this will be the wettest game of the season, onwards and upwards 😊
