Match report St Cross Symondians won the toss and elected to bowl.

Today was the first match of the season for the ladies first XI and a tough game to start against St Cross Symondians. Thanks to a late step in by Alannah (thanks Alannah!) we were able to field a full team and off we started. With Dani Ransley as our new Captain/Coach/Player/Manager we knew we were in good hands.

We lost the toss (honest, they are good hands I promise!) and were made to bat first. The ground looked wonderful but thanks to rain the ball ran like it was stuck to Velcro. All the 4s that should have been turned into 2s with constant sighs from the spectators knowing that it should have been more. Despite that, Dani managed 26 and Maya 24. There is a new player in the club, Shayna, who now is known as ‘The Hustler’ to our advantage. She scored 30 and enthusiastically ran out Maya and Alannah :)

Everyone got to bat, but with velcro grass we achieved only 118 before being bowled out in 28 overs.

‘This should all be over soon’ said Liv during tea but we knew that bowling and fielding are always our strong point in the team.

Freya and Liv opened the bowling, Liv getting a maiden over for her first over. Outstanding bowling was done by Dani, Maya, Immy and Shayna, getting 5, 2, 2 and 1 wicket respectively. Shayna’s bowling on the score sheet looked like she was eating something nice but got something stuck in her teeth ‘Wmmm’. Fabulous fielding by all as the St Cross team were very big hitters and also used to playing on the slope which the pitch was on, an additional challenge for our team!

As the overs progressed St Cross edged closer and closer to our score. Would we manage to keep it? On 33 overs they were on 111 and needed 7 to beat us, Marvellous Maya was given the ball by Dani, could she do it, one more wicket to get……the crowd were on the edge of their seats, a big hitter was still in play. One run…dot….no ball (the crowd gasp, they were now on 112), then the big hit and they got 3, arrggh the crowd cried (over the shouting for joy by St Cross). 117 and 2 more balls to go. Maya’s eyes focused on those wickets, ran at top speed and whack, the wicket was taken. The Portsmouth crowd screamed in delight (not very cricket I agree but it was so exciting!) and the victory was ours!

Glory may have been given to the few in this but the great joy of cricket is that it is totally a team match, the victory could not happen without all 11 players and the best is it can be shared between everyone, including the crowd (and the very biased scorer!).
