Match report In the absence of Mother Jo C, today’s match report comes from other Jo (Jo F not Jo C or Jo M - so many Jo's!)

Another Sunday, another 35 over game of cricket in the middle of nowhere for Emily’s Emeralds. Hursley Park provided the pitch and an opposition of just 9 players. Before the match had even started we were already 2 up on them!

The toss was lost and Hursley decided to bat first. After a quick warm up we were out in the field ready to play. Opening the bowling was Freya and Lauren, a nice mix of fast pace and spin. However Hursley were ready for it and their two opening batters kept the field busy. Lots of running from Portsmouth to cover the quick outfield and a few leg bruises for sure for Jo C and Jo F as the ball bobbled up awkwardly over the uneven ground.

The breakthrough came in over 10 as Neev stepped up and bowled out the first of her three wickets of the day. After that came the classic ‘England collapse’ and by over 19 Hursley had gone from 50-0 to 76-8 all out. Two more wickets for Neev, one bowled and other caught by Emma (who, by the way, was suffering with hay fever and had not long been putting drops in her eyes - but she soldiered on!). Emily M then bowled one out and then had another brilliantly caught at mid-off by Leya. Hearts were in mouths at this point as the ball seemed to be in Leya’s hands, then it wasn’t, and then it was! OUT! Leya then turned to bowling and after a wide came her first wicket. This was quickly followed by another which was caught by a sprinting Emily M who covered a good 15m and made the catch. And the final one was caught behind by Emma after taking the slightest of nicks. The innings ended although no one knew that as we thought they had another batter to come but apparently not as the batting pair walked off to the pavilion for lunch.

Lauren and Emily N then bravely headed out to open our batting. Poor Emily was bowled but not before punishing a loose ball for four! Lauren and Emma F did a solid job of batting out a number of overs and frustrating the bowlers. After the fall of Lauren came the middle order big hitters of Jo C and Emily M. All guns blazing, Jo C quickly found her batting feet (and her running shoes) as she clocked up the runs between the wickets, much to the amusement of her watching teammates who said on a few occasions how much she hated running between the wickets! Emily M surprised the bowlers with her aggressive play and quickly hit 14 off about 2 overs before being out by LBW. Neev and a keen Simran (eager to get a bat!) closed out the batting in style with Simran hitting two fours and ending NOT OUT for 9.

A special mention this week to Sarah White, from Portsmouth’s W10 team, who kindly stepped in at the last minute to give us a full team. We’ve not quite converted her to hardball cricket but there’s still time to do so! PS - for anyone who’s interested, Sarah did make it back to Pompey in time for the 6pm cinema showing that she had tickets to. That’s all down to the speed that we closed out the match so well done all.
